HANOVER, N.H. – On a very cold, blustery day in Hanover the five seniors on the Dartmouth field hockey team had a day as they helped account for a 9-4 victory over Vermont in the Big Green's last home contest of the 2010 season.
Dartmouth (10-6) took a two-goal lead over its twin-state rival in the first, thanks to goals by Claire Byrne (Rye, N.Y.) but the Catamounts (5-13) tied the game off two scores by Callie Bellimer. Sophomore Lisa Masini (Ann Arbor, Mich.) gave her team the lead again at 34:37 as the Big Green never trailed for the rest of the contest.
Coming out of the halftime break, sophomore Maya Herm (Bethesda, Md.) scored quickly into the second half as Byrne tallied the assist. UVM got one back when Alana Izzo scored off a corner but four straight goals by seniors Kelly McHenry (Williamsburg, Va.), Virginia Peisch (Koenigstein, Germany) and Kerry Bracco (Hampton Falls, N.H.) ended the day for the Cats then with 00:44 showing on the clock, Allison Weinstock (Pittsburgh, Pa.) combined with Masini for the final tally of the contest.
Meagan Vakiener (Port Murray, N.J.) started the day in the cage for the Big Green as she picked up the win and is now 9-5 on the season. Sophomore Jenna Stearns came on late in the game and faced just one shot.
In goal for UVM, Stephanie Zygmunt and Brooke Crane combined for 15 saves as Zygmunt took the loss. Dartmouth outshot UVM, 28-6 and had 13 corners to the Catamounts two.
McHenry led the Big Green with seven points on the day while Byrne finished with six, Masini had five, Peisch had four while Herm, Bracco and Weinstock each had two points.
Dartmouth wraps up the season at Cornell next Saturday, game time is 12 p.m.
