HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth field hockey team came within 80 seconds of a win over Yale on Friday, Oct. 16, at Chase Field, but the Bulldogs tied it late in regulation and took a 2-1 decision in a shootout after a scoreless overtime period.
Dartmouth had led since the third quarter, but Yale found the equalizer with 1:20 remaining.
Kylie McKinley was the story for the Big Green, playing all 90 minutes and making six saves. Raina Johns and Ruby Walsh each added a defensive save. Ella Bowman scored the lone Dartmouth goal in regulation, with assists from Ally Brosie and Riley Dumigan. Dumigan also converted Dartmouth's only shootout attempt.
The first half was scoreless. Yale controlled the early going, with Johns stopping a Bulldog shot in the first quarter. Dartmouth's first shot came in the second quarter, from Amelie Luessmann, and McKinley made her first save later in the period.
The third quarter belonged to Dartmouth. Dumigan took back-to-back penalty corners, and Bowman finished the second to put the Big Green ahead, 1-0, at 35:04. McKinley then turned aside Yale shots at 40:05 and 41:25 to protect the lead.
Yale pressed in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs scored off the second of two late penalty corners at 58:40 to make it 1-1.
Yale held a 5-1 shot edge in the first overtime, and McKinley made three saves. Walsh added a defensive stop, and Gemma Franco's shot sailed high for Dartmouth's lone look. The second overtime passed without a shot.
In the shootout, McKinley stopped two Yale attempts, but the Bulldogs converted two. Dumigan scored for Dartmouth, but Lucia Campaño, Bowman, Luessmann and Brosie were denied.
