PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Dartmouth junior
Peter Williamson (Hanover, N.H.) was one of just three players to shoot under par during the first round of the Big 5 Invitational at the Plymouth Country Club on Saturday, finishing the day in second place at with a two-under 68. Only Furman Paladin Matthew Boone posted a better score with a 66 (-4).
As a team, Dartmouth ended the first round in a tie for ninth place out of the 21 teams with a 296 (+16) while the Paladins (283, +3) opened a six-stroke lead over Princeton. Seven of the eight Ivy schools participated, and the Big Green were third among that group, trailing only the Tigers by seven strokes and Yale by three.
Williamson birdied three consecutive holes on the front nine and was four-under par after 10 holes before taking a bogey on the par-4 11th. After suffering a double-bogey on the 16th hole, he recovered to birdie the par-5 17th and par the final hole to complet his 68.
The next-best Big Green score was carded by sophomore
James Pleat (Nashua, N.H.) with a two-over 72. Pleat got off to a bit of a rough start, bogeying three of the first four holes, but birdied a pair of holes on the back nine with just one bogey.
Also competing for Dartmouth were junior
Teddy Overton (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) with a 76 (+6), senior
Davis Mullany (Great Barrington, Mass.) with an 80 (+10) and sophomore
Owen Lynch (Rumford, R.I.) with an 85 (+15).
The tournament will conclude on Sunday.
