HANOVER, N.H. — Dartmouth junior tailback Nick Schwieger (Norton, Mass.) and freshman linebacker Bronson Green (Los Angeles, Calif.) each earned one of the final weekly awards from the Ivy League for their performances in the 31-0 victory at Princeton to end the 2010 season. This is the third time this season (and fourth time in his career) that Schwieger has been named the Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week, while Green became the second Big Green player this season to be chosen as the Rookie of the Week.
Schwieger scored three of the four touchdowns while running for 105 yards on 26 carries in Dartmouth's first win at Princeton in 10 years. He gave the Big Green a 7-0 lead on their first possession of the game on a six-yard jaunt, then extended the advantage to 14 points at the intermission with a three-yard burst in the second quarter. His final score came on a five-yard run early in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach at 24-0.
For Schwieger, it was his sixth 100-yard game of the season and gave him the Ivy League rushing crown for the second straight year, averaging 125.9 yards per game. His 1,133 yards on the ground are the second most in a season in Dartmouth history and just the fourth time a rusher has topped 1,000 yards. Schwieger's three scores gave him 14 rushing touchdowns on the season, tying another Big Green record. He led the Ivy League not only in rushing yards, but in all-purpose yards (158.8 per game) and scoring (9.3 per game).
Schwieger shared the award this week with Penn's Brandon Colavita, who also ran for three touchdowns while gaining 103 yards on 16 carries in the Quakers' 31-7 win over Cornell.
Green, who had been named to the Ivy League Honor Roll after three other games this season, is the 21st player in Dartmouth football history to be selected as the league's Rookie of the Week. The middle linebacker contributed eight tackles, one for a loss, and a pass break-up to the first Big Green shutout in 14 years. The pass break-up was crucial to the shutout as it came on 3rd-and-goal from the seven, forcing Princeton to attempt a 24-yard field goal, which was botched. Despite being just a freshman, Green finished his initial campaign fourth on the team in tackles with 51 with a half sack and four passes broken up.
In addition, senior defensive end Charles Bay (Marietta, Ga.) and junior cornerback/return specialist Shawn Abuhoff (Hialeah, Fla.) were named to the Ivy League Honor Roll. Bay, the conference leader in sacks, led the Big Green with 10 tackles — including 1.5 sacks — plus hit the Tiger quarterback as he threw the ball inside the red zone to force an interception at the goal line, preserving the shutout. Abuhoff, the league's leading punt returner and cover man, had two punt returns for 17 yards, plus began the second half with a 53-yard kickoff return to the Princeton 36. And it was Abuhoff who collected that interception, his fourth of the year, on Bay's hit.
Dartmouth finished the season with a 6-4 overall record — its first winning season in 13 years — and a 3-4 mark in the Ivy League to place fifth. At least eight starters on offense will return in 2011, including Schwieger and quarterback Conner Kempe (Tequesta, Fla.), as well as eight starters on defense with Abuhoff headlining that group.
