HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth women's basketball team picked up its third straight win as Sasha Dosenko (Kiev, Ukraine) and Meghan McFee (Manchester, Conn.) combined for 23 points off the bench.
Dartmouth (3-4) shot 46 percent from the floor and held Northeastern (2-4) to just 32.8 percent shooting. The Big Green also had a slight 38-35 rebounding advantage.
Senior Brittney Smith (Fort Worth, Texas) recorded her third straight double-double with 13 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and three steals. Dosenko poured in a season-high 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting and McFee added 10 including two triples.
Three Huskies scored in double-figures led by Rachael Pecota with 17 points and seven rebounds.
Dartmouth jumped out to an early lead in the game and never looked back. Though Pecota put her team on the board with a three, down 4-3, at 17:12, the Big Green answered with a 14-0 run that included points from five different players. Dosenko scored six straight, capitalizing as the Big Green broke Northeastern's press, to make it 18-3 at 11:08.
A three from Afreyea Tolbert started a 12-4 run for Northeastern, which cut into the Dartmouth lead to make it a 22-15 game at 6:23. A big three from McFee stopped the bleeding, followed by a jumper from Dosenko to make it 27-15 at 5:23.
The teams traded buckets for the balance of the half and a three-point play on a jumpshot by Nicola Zimmer (Chevy Chase, Md.) sent Dartmouth into halftime with a 35-23 lead.
Dartmouth's defense was solid in the second half, but the Big Green struggled to capitalized on the myriad of Northeastern turnovers it was causing. The Huskies ultimately opened the half on a 6-1 run as a Pecota three cut the lead to 36-29 at 14:03. Smith answered with back-to-back buckets before senior Louise Vanden Bosch (Kettering, Ohio) added five straight around a Pecota triple to make it a 45-32 Dartmouth lead at 11:17.
Northeastern made things interesting by answering most of the Big Green's buckets, and a Tiffany Crews jumper following one from Smith made it a 49-40 Dartmouth lead at 6:45. Though a Smith layup brought the lead back to 11, Northeastern scored four unanswered to bring it back down to seven, 51-44 at 4:28.
The game got chippy down the stretch and after six unanswered points the Huskies cut the lead to just four points, 56-52 with 1:59 to play. The Big Green allowed just two more points and a pair of free throws from McFee with nine seconds to play put the Green out of striking distance, up 60-52. Pecota hit two free throws with five ticks left but it was not enough as the Big Green held on for the 60-54 triumph.
Dartmouth has an 11-day break for final exams and will be back in action on Dec. 12 when it travels to Hartford.
