ROCHESTER, Mich. - Despite outplaying the Grizzlies in the second half, a first-half deficit proved too much as the Dartmouth women's basketball team dropped a 65-52 decision at Oakland tonight.
Sasha Dosenko (Kiev, Ukraine) and
Faziah Steen (Kalamazoo, Mich.) led Dartmouth with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Senior
Cassie Cooper (Chelsea, Maine) added eight points, six rebounds, four assists and two blocks and played solid post defense all night. Oakland had a balanced attack led by Bethany Watterworth's 19 points and 11 rebounds.
With two starters out of the lineup, the Big Green struggled to find its rhythm offensively. While Dartmouth assisted on 15 of its 18 shots on offense, the Big Green connected on just 31 percent of its shots for the night and was the victim of 14 blocked shots. Defensively, Dartmouth forced Oakland into 16 turnovers and had success running the Grizzlies late into their shot clock. It was transition buckets, however, that doomed the Big Green as Oakland scored 26 fast break points including 18 in the first half.
After trailing at the half, 34-20, Dartmouth played a much tougher second half and outscored Oakland, 32-31.
Oakland opened the first half with an 8-3 run capped by a Sharise Calhoun runout at 16:15. The Big Green responded with a 5-2 mini-run including a three-point play by
Louise Vanden Bosch to make it 10-8 at 15:19. The Grizzlies answered with a big 12-3 run stopped finally by a Vanden Bosch jumper at 6:00 that cut the deficit to 22-13.
The Grizzlies picked it up again though, going on another 10-2 run before a
Meghan McFee (Manchester, Conn.) three made it a 32-18 game at 2:35. Each team put up two more points before the break for Oakland's 34-20 halftime lead.
The teams traded buckets in the early goings of the second half but Oakland eventually built up a 44-26 advantage at 14:24 before sophomore
Kelsey Byrd (Saratoga, Calif.) hit the first of her three three-pointers on the next possession. The Big Green battled back and Cooper put together a 5-0 run on her own to cut the lead to 46-34 at 11:43.
Oakland had an answer for every Dartmouth run, however, and the Grizzlies ultimately built the lead back up to 19 points at 6:44 after a Watterworth layup. Steen hit a big three for Dartmouth at 4:59 to cut the lead down to 14 but again Oakland got it right back up with five straight points. Byrd hit her last two threes in the final 2:28 to help the Big Green keep pace for the final, 65-52.
Byrd finished with a career high nine points and two assists in an efficient 13 minutes of play. Senior
Meghan McFee added five points, four rebounds, four steals and two blocks.
Dartmouth is back in action this Saturday, Dec. 18 when it faces #14/#17 Michigan State in East Lansing for a 1 p.m. tip.
