PRINCETON, N.J. — The Ivy League announced its men's basketball weekly award winners today, and Dartmouth freshman
Gediminas Bertasius (Vilnius, Lithuania) took home the Rookie of the Week honor. Princeton's Kareem Maddox was named the league's Player of the Week for the second consecutive week, scoring 23 in a win over Wagner.
It was a lean week in the league with finals taking place at many of the schools, leading to just five games throughout the conference. Dartmouth played two of those games, falling on the road at St. Francis (N.Y.) by eight,
69-61, and at Iowa State by 29,
71-42, despite trailing by just one at the half.
Bertasius averaged 3.0 points and 3.5 rebounds in the two games with a pair of blocks and a steal. Against the Terriers last Tuesday, Bertasius tallied one field goal and three rebounds, plus pilfered a pass in 16 minutes on the floor. His one bucket brought the Big Green within four of St. Francis in the middle of the second half, then he promptly got his steal which led to another Dartmouth field goal to cut the deficit to two. The rookie then played 18 minutes against the Cyclones of the Big 12, going 1-for-3 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the foul line for four points. Bertasius also hauled in four rebounds and blocked a season-high two shots.
Bertasius is the first Big Green rookie to garner the honor since center
Matt LaBove one year ago.
Dartmouth has one more game in Iowa before Christmas, playing at Drake on Tuesday, Dec. 21 at 8:05 p.m. (EST).
