CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Dartmouth softball team had a rough day in its second outing at the University of South Florida Tournament on Saturday. The Big Green took an early lead against Maryland in the first game but the Terps stormed back and won, 11-4. In Game Two, #21 Illinois took a 16-1 victory in five innings.
Against Maryland, Dartmouth (1-10) struck first with two runs in the bottom of the first with a couple of singles by Hillary Hubert (Grant Park, Ill.) and Noelle Ramirez (Pompton Plains, N.J.). With both runners on base, a one-out single by Molly Khalil (Seal Beach, Calif.) plated one as Ramirez came around on another single by Alyssa Parker (Spring Valley, Calif.).
A pair of unearned runs by the Terps in the third inning tied the contest before taking the lead for good in the top of the fourth with four runs to take a 6-2 lead.
Maryland kept the offense going by scoring two more runs in the sixth. The Big Green scored its final two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning off a hit by Khalil, a Parker walk, and then a double by Audrey Kolodziej (Morton Grove, Ill.) to score both.
A single and double in the seventh inning finalized the score at 11-4. Evan Gray (Edmond, Okla.) was the pitcher of record for the Big Green. She went the complete game.
In the second game of the day, the Illini bats turned in their top offensive performance of the season with a 16-1 defeat of Dartmouth, scoring 11 runs in the first inning. Seven different Illini accounted for 14 hits. The Orange and Blue's 16 runs were a season-high.
Dartmouth's Nikki Yee (Martinez, Calif.) and Hubert recorded two singles before a fielder's choice by Ramirez, scored Hubert for the first run of the game in the top of the first. However Illinois took control of the game shortly there after and never looked back. The Illini sent 15 batters to the plate in the bottom of the frame and recorded eight hits.
The Orange and Blue keeping the pressure on the Big Green and scoring four more runs in the third to open up a 15-1 advantage before a home run in the fourth accounted for all the scoring.
Hillary Barker (Duvall, Wash.) began the game in the circle for Dartmouth but she was relieved by Kat Hicks (Templeton, Calif.). Hicks went 3.1 innings with one strikeout.
The Big Green continues at the South Florida tournament with matchup on Sunday against Florida Atlantic at 11:00 am.
