BOSTON, Mass. - The Dartmouth softball team had Boston University on the ropes in the second game of the doubleheader on Sunday but the Big Green could not hold on, dropping both games to the Terriers. BU took Game One, 4-0 and came from behind in the seventh to win Game Two, 4-3.
In the first game the two teams remained scoreless until BU used a three-run fourth to take the early lead. Then in the bottom of the fifth another run came across to make it 4-0 for the home team.
In the top of the sixth Molly Khalil (Seal Beach, Calif.) knocked in the second double of the game for the Big Green. She was stranded at second as a strikeout ended the inning.
Pitcher Hillary Barker (Duvall, Wash.) wasn't to be trifled with in the Terrier's half of the inning as the sophomore struck out the side to give Dartmouth a momentum boost going into the final inning of the contest.
Kirsten Costello (Windsor, N.Y.) tried to get the Big Green on the board in the top of the seventh when she knocked her second hit of the game, a two-out single to left field but unfortunately a pop up ended the inning and the game as Dartmouth fell, 4-0.
Barker went the complete game with four earned runs and three strikeouts. Cassidi Hardy pitched for BU as she threw the complete game shutout, allowing just two hits while striking out seven.
In Game Two, Nikki Yee (Martinez, Calif.) began things right for the Big Green with a leadoff single up the middle. Costello hit into a fielder's choice that got Yee caught up heading to third. Hillary Hubert (Grant Park, Ill.) was walked as she and Costello both advanced. Another fielder's choice for Leigha Clarkson (Perris, Calif.) put runners at the corners but unfortunately a flyout ended Dartmouth's chances to put a run across.
The Terriers continued to score with three runs in the bottom half of the frame to take the early lead. Yee was able to get a run for the Big Green in the third inining after reaching on a fielder's choice and advancing on a groundout and illegal pitch. She came home when Clarkson singled through the left side.
In the fifth, Dartmouth added another run to cut into BU's lead. Christy Autin (Harwood Heights, Ill.) reached on an infield single and came home when Clarkson again came up big with a double up the middle. The Terrier's were able to garner another hit in the bottom half of the inning but pitcher Evan Gray (Edmond, Okla.) and the Big Green defense kept BU off the board as the Big Green looked to get a few more runs.
Noelle Ramirez (Pompton Plains, N.J.) was Dartmouth's hero in the top of the sixth when the freshman lead off with her her team-leading third home run of the season. Alyssa Parker (Spring Valley, Calif.) kept things going with a double to left field but unfortunately the runner stayed at second as Autin hit into a double play.
Despite getting a runner to leadoff the seventh the Big Green was unable to score the go-ahead run as the Terriers went to bat. Rachel Hebert came to the plate and with one swing of the bat the senior knocked the ball over the center field wall to give Boston University the 4-3 victory.
Clarkson was 2-for-2 for the Big GReen while Yee, Costello, Ramirez, Parker and Autin each had one hit. Hebert and April Setterlund each went 3-for-3.
Gray went the complete game for Dartmouth, striking out five. In the circle for BU, Whitney Tuthill began the game and went five complete before Megan Currier and Hardy came in to finish the contest.
The Big Green will be back in action on Tuesday, traveling to UMass for a doubleheader that begins at 2:00 pm.
