Hello friends of Dartmouth Golf,
We just completed another spring trip of a lifetime for the fifth year in a row as the team went to Phoenix, Ariz. I need to thank all of you for your generosity through the years, which makes these amazing trips possible. A special thanks needs to go to the Overton family who hosted the team for 10 nights in their home.
Thanks also need to be given to Ted Dardani who played a major role in getting some quality range time and access to some excellent golf. Thank you is not enough for the overall effort that was put forth by all of you who help piece this trip together. It was a pleasure meeting and getting to play with alumni Norman Leach from Vancouver and John Daily from Rye, N.Y.
It was an incredible bonding experience for the boys. As mentioned after last year's trip, the coach stayed in a nice quiet little hotel down the street. The kids had their space and time together and we played nine rounds of golf at courses such as Desert Mountain and Grayhawk - both TPC courses - and Talking Stick among others. We played a friendly match against the University of Wyoming, which turned out to be a wonderful event for both schools. Practice time is a little harder to come by, however, when you are dealing with all these private courses. But I think we came home ready to
play some good golf this spring.
Golf was not the only thing that happened on this trip. We attended two Phoenix Suns games and an Anaheim Angels spring training baseball game, actually sitting with the Angels' owner Arte Moreno and his lovely wife, Carol, basically on the field and in the dugout. Pam Overton is one special lady, and I hope one day all of you have a chance to meet her as well as her friends who hosted the team for some great dinners and cookouts. The experience was that of a road trip while being at home all at the same time. I know the kids were thrilled, and they gave them so many special memories. It never ends here at Dartmouth.
I need to wrap up the trip by telling you that five of these kids went skydiving from 13,000 feet on the last morning and they were stoked. They tried getting the old coach to go, but it is tough enough for me to get on a plane, let alone jumping out of one. I did have permission from the Athletic Department, which mentioned this was a first-time request. As I have said numerous times, these kids are special.
We head to Yale on Saturday and then to Princeton the following week. We will follow last year's model and bring different kids to each tournament to find the best team for the Ivies. I would say that if we get some help from the 4 and 5 spot, this crew could be dangerous. This is a team made up of some very special kids, both on and off the course. We look forward to representing Dartmouth College and all of you in the coming weeks.
Once again, from the bottom of our hearts, we appreciate everybody and everything that you have done for us and our program.
Hope to see you in the coming weeks at one of the tournaments.
