HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth softball allowed Yale to tally just six runs on the day as the Big Green won 7-3 and 11-3 in an Ivy League doubleheader on Monday afternoon at Sachem Field. Its the second sweep of the Bulldogs in as many days as Dartmouth is currently tied with Harvard atop the Ivy League's North Division standings.
In the opening game of the day, the Big Green (11-20, 9-3 Ivy) put across four runs in the first two innings. Dartmouth had a big half to its second after the two teams traded runs in the first and top of the second. With walks issued to Alyssa Parker (Spring Valley, Calif.) and Audrey Kolodziej (Morton Grove, Ill.) to begin Dartmouth's bottom half of the frame, a sacrifice bunt by Christy Autin (Harwood Heights, Ill.) advanced both runners a base. With two outs Kirsten Costello (Windsor, N.Y.) was also walked to load the bases before Hillary Hubert (Grant Park, Ill.) singled up the middle, scoring one. Leigha Clarkson (Perris, Calif.) garnered the fourth walk of the inning as Kolodziej came home. Noelle Ramirez (Pompton Plains, N.J.) completed the scoring with a single that plated Costello.
The Bulldogs (9-22,4-8) were able to cut into the Big Green's lead with single runs in the third and fourth. Dartmouth held the one-run advantage until the bottom of the sixth when the Big Green scored three more to complete the 7-3 tally. Costello's three-run home run was the highlight for the inning as the senior blasted her fifth of the season.
Hillary Barker (Duvall, Wash.) picked up her fifth win in the circle. It was her 11th complete game this year. Hubert was 2-for-4 with one RBI while Costello was 1-for-1 with two runs scored and three RBIs.
In the second game, Dartmouth batted around in an eight-run second inning to take what proved to be an insurmountable lead. Walks to Clarkson and Parker began the frame before a sac bunt by Kolodziej put the runners in scoring position for Christy Autin who singled through the right side, plating one. Costello came up big again with a single to left field, scoring a runner before both her and Autin advanced on a passed ball. Back-to-back singles by Hubert and Ramirez scored two more as the Bulldogs brought in another pitcher, Mariclaire Rebman, to take over pitching duties. Rebman proceeded to hit Molly Khalil and walk Clarkson as Hubert walked home. With bases loaded, another passed ball scored one before a single up the middle by Clarkson plated the final two tallies of the inning.
Yale cut into the lead with two runs in the fifth but Dartmouth was not done with the thrills as rookie Hubert saw her home run ball hit off the left field foul pole as she put three across in the bottom of the fifth to end the game early for the Big Green.
Costello and Hubert both were 3-for-4 with two runs scored apiece. Hubert knocked in a game-high four runners while Costello had one. Freshman Evan Gray (Edmond, Okla.) picked up the win in the circle, going the full five innings with two strikeouts.
Dartmouth will be back in action on Wednesday, hosting the University of Albany in a non conference doubleheader at Sachem Field. First pitch is slated for 3:00 pm.
