SPRINGFIELD, N.J. — After shooting a 305 in the first round at the Ivy League Men's Golf Championships held on the Lower Course at Baltusrol Golf Club in the first round on Friday, Dartmouth shaved five strokes off that score with a 300 in the second round today. Unfortunately, the Big Green fell from a third-place tie into sixth place as four schools posted better scores on the second day of play.
Columbia posted the best round of the tournament so far with a seven-over 287 today to jump from sixth place into the lead by two strokes over Penn. The top six schools are clustered pretty tightly, however, as Dartmouth is just nine strokes off the pace with the final round to come tomorrow.
For the second straight day, sophomore Peter Williamson (Hanover, N.H.) tied for the top round for the Big Green, firing a four-over 74 along with sophomore Teddy Overton (Paradise Valley, Ariz.). Both had one birdie on the day and five bogeys while making par on each of the other 12 holes. Williamson is tied for fifth, six strokes off the pace set by Penn's Scott Williams — who had the only round under par for the tournament today — with a 141 (+1).
One day after tying for the team's low score at three-over par, senior Dave Putney (Unionville, Conn.) carded a 77 (+7). He recovered from a rough start to the day, going to four-over after three holes, before settling in to his groove and finishing the day in a tie for 10th place at 10-over par.
Both junior co-captain Davis Mullany (Great Barrington, Mass.) and freshman James Pleat (Nashua, N.H.) improved their scores today with a 76 (+6).
Dartmouth will tee off tomorrow with Cornell and Harvard in the final round, with Pleat starting things off with a tee time at 11:20 a.m.
