CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Dartmouth softball team struggled in its doubleheader on Saturday at Harvard. The Crimson won the first game, 9-0 and took the second, 7-1 enroute to its third North Division Title. Harvard now stands at 24-21 on the season at 15-3 in conference play while Dartmouth moves to 11-7 in Ivy action and 14-25 overall.
The Crimson jumped out to an early lead in game one and used solid pitching to keep the Big Green scoreless. The hosts took a 4-0 lead after its first inning of play. Jennifer Francis ended the game early for Harvard with a bases-loaded single to center, giving the hosts a 9-0 win in six innings.
Nikki Yee (Martinez, Calif.) and Hillary Hubert (Grant Park, Ill.) both gave the Big Green an early chance as both singled in the first inning. Another hit by Yee in the third and Hubert in the sixth showed Dartmouth was able to generate some offense but Harvard starter Rachel Brown was solid in her four innings of work, striking out eight while allowing just three hits. Margaux Black kept the Big Green scoreless through the final two innings, striking out three and allowing just one hit.
In the circle, Hillary Barker (Duvall, Wash.) began the game and went four innings before being relieved by Kat Hicks (Templeton, Calif.). The combined for four strikeouts.
The Crimson picked up right where it left off to start game two as an RBI single from Francis sparked a three-run first inning. The hosts built a 7-0 lead in the fourth inning, registering five hits in the frame. Dartmouth got one back in the top of the sixthwhen Yee continued her hitting with an infield single. Kirsten Costello (Windsor, N.Y.) recorded an extra-base hit with a double to right center as Yee advanced to third. Hubert hit her third single of the game, scoring Yee.
Brown picked up her 16th win of the season, contributing four innings of two-hit ball while Black scattered four hits in three innings of relief work. For Dartmouth, Hicks began the game, going 3.1 innings with two strikeouts before Evan Gray (Edmond, Okla.) came on to go 2.2 innings. Hubert again had two hits, going 2-for-3 with one RBI. Yee, Costello, Molly Khalil (Seal Beach, Calif.) and Leigha Clarkson (Perris, Calif.) each recorded one apiece.
The two teams will meet again on Sunday at Dartmouth's Sachem Field, first pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
