HAMDEN, Conn. - With two victories on Saturday, the Dartmouth women's volleyball team won its second tournament of the season with three wins at the Quinnipiac Invitational. The Big Green is now 6-0 to start the season. Dartmouth defeated Quinnipiac, 3-0 (25-20, 27-25, 25-17) and then St. Peter's 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-16) to wrap up the tourney.
Junior Madeline Baird (Austin, Texas) recorded 32 kills and digs to earn a spot on the All-Tournament team. Joining Baird was classmate Annie Villanueva (Santa Barbara, Calif.) who had 15 kills, 20 digs and five blocks in the two matches. Amber Bryant (Libertyville, Ill.) racked up 40 digs while Kelsey Johnson (Carlsbad, Calif.) had five blocks and 13 digs.
The opening match of the day against the host Bobcats was extremely close for the Big Green. In the opening set the two sides traded the lead several times before Dartmouth finally took a four-point lead at 12-8. Late in the set the Bobcats pulled to within three but it was too little too late as Dartmouth held on for the win. In the second set, Quinnipiac took the early lead and went up by as much as seven before the Big Green rallied to a 18-19 score behind three big kills by Baird. Another kill by the junior gave Dartmouth its first lead in the set at 20-19. It was then point-for-point for a very tense couple of minutes until Baird got the last two kills of the set, giving the Big Green a 2-0 lead in the match. In what was the deciding third set, Dartmouth took a quick lead but the Bobcats came back to tie. Eight straight points by the Big Green in the final points of the set gave Dartmouth the victory and the match.
In the second match against St. Peter's, Dartmouth won all three sets by the same score. In the first set the Peahens took a six-point lead early but the Big Green battled back and tied the score at 15 before pulling ahead to take the win. In the second set it was all Dartmouth as the Big Green took the early lead and and never allowed St. Peter's to get closer then four points. The third set was much like the second as Dartmouth went up quickly and the Peahens were never able to gather themselves to get much closer then four points.
