HANOVER, N.H. — On the strength of 216 rushing yards and 273 all-purpose yards in a 43-20 season-opening victory at Bucknell on Saturday, Dartmouth junior tailback Nick Schwieger (Norton, Mass.) has been selected by the Ivy League as a Co-Offensive Player of the Week. Yale quarterback Patrick Witt shared the honor with Schwieger for throwing for 407 yards in a 40-35 win over Georgetown.
Schwieger, who topped 200 yards in a game for the second time in his career, carried the ball 25 times for a 8.6-yard average and the sixth-most yards ever gained on the ground by a Big Green player. Combined with his five receptions for 57 yards, he also laid claim to the third-most all-purpose yards in school history. Fifteen of his 30 touches resulted in Dartmouth gaining a first down, more than half of the team's total of 28.
At the intermission, Schwieger had charged his way for 90 yards, but the Big Green trailed, 20-9. He took over in the second half, beginning with his 56-yard touchdown run that gave Dartmouth the lead for good late in the third quarter at 23-20. In the fourth quarter, he shot through the middle for an 11-yard score, putting the game securely in the Big Green's hands at 36-20.
Last year Schwieger ran for 242 yards — a school record that lasted for two weeks — in a 28-6 victory over Columbia. He is one of only two Big Green backs to accumulate 200 yards rushing twice in a career.
Schwieger was also chosen as a College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) National Running Back of the Week for the FCS classification.
Earning Honor Roll status this week is junior cornerback/return specialist Shawn Abuhoff who brought back five kickoffs for 114 yards, three punts for 24 more, and an interception 56 yards for a touchdown to put the finishing touch on the victory in the fourth quarter.
Dartmouth will play its home opener this Saturday against Sacred Heart in the first meeting between the two schools on the gridiron. The kickoff is slated for 1:30 p.m. with live video and audio provided on the official Dartmouth athletics web site, DartmouthSports.com.
