Pierre Named Ivy League Co-Rookie of the Week

HANOVER, N.H. — Making his first collegiate start in just his second game at Dartmouth, freshman tailback Dominick Pierre (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) gained over 100 yards on the ground and scored two touchdowns in the 21-19 victory over Sacred Heart on Saturday to help him earn the Ivy League Co-Rookie of the Week award. His is the tenth Rookie of the Week award to go to a Dartmouth player over the past three-plus seasons.

Pierre, getting the start because junior starter Nick Schwieger was ill, carried the ball 25 times in the game, gobbling up 110 yards for a 4.4-yard average on the day. He was very consistent, never getting held for a loss until his final carry, and posting three runs of 10-12 yards. His three-yard touchdown in the second quarter got Dartmouth on the board and gave the Big Green a 7-6 lead. In the third quarter, it was his seven-yard jaunt into the end zone that gave the Green what turned out to be the winning score. In addition, Pierre caught a pair of passes for 12 yards.

Other accolades for the week belong to senior linebacker Luke Hussey (Seattle, Wash.) and freshman punter Daniel Barstein (Birmingham, Ala.) Hussey was named to the Ivy League Honor Roll for the week for making 12 tackles (six solo) with one going for a loss while breaking up a pass as well, while Barstein earned honorable mention for the College Football Performance Awards FCS Punter of the Week by averaging 45.3 yards on his three punts — with a net average of exactly 40 yards in his first collegiate action.

Dartmouth also earned three points in The Sports Network/Fathead.com FCS Top 25 College Football Poll. The last time the Big Green earned any points in the poll was 1997 and have not been ranked at the end of the season since the inaugural poll in 1996 when they posted a perfect 10-0 record.

Dartmouth (2-0) will try to extend its win streak to three to start the year when it travels to Philadelphia, Pa., this Saturday to square off against the Penn Quakers (1-1) in both teams' first Ivy game of the season. Penn is coming off a tough 22-10 defeat against top-ranked Villanova as the Quakers held a one-point lead with under five minutes to play. The kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m. and will be televised locally by Comcast.
