HANOVER, N.H. - An early second half goal by senior Peyton Tata (Virginia Beach, Va.) gave the Dartmouth women's soccer team a 1-0 win over Northeastern today.
All four teams in the 2010 Dartmouth Nike Classic came away
with a victory, in a tournament that featured three 1-0 games. Dartmouth was playing just its second game of the season today while it was Northeastern's fifth.
"I was a little bit
nervous today knowing that we didn't have full game fitness yet coming into the
second game in three days," said head coach Angie Hind. "We really challenged the team to compete and get
closer and we knew Northeastern would be very direct and very physical. Credit
to the players from back to front — every single one of them was prepared to put
their foot in where it hurt and really compete in the battles and when we had
the ball we had composure. We had some kids in there out of position and some
freshmen in their first game and it was a real team effort."
The game started out in favor of Northeastern (3-2), which took the first three shots of the day including one saved by junior Colleen Hogan (Houston, Texas) and another that dinged off the post in the eighth minute. The Big Green's first real opportunity came in the 18th minute after Libby Hamlin (Vernon, Conn.) took a ball from Katie Davis (San Marino, Calif.) into the box and fired but a Northeastern defender made a timely tackle just as she shot to block the ball.
Dartmouth (1-1) continued to control the play from that point forward including a good shot by Aly O'Dea (Irvine, Calif.) that was saved my Michelle Sopko and two hard shots by rookie midfielder Marina Moschitto (Andover, Mass.) including one on goal.
The teams went into halftime tied, 0-0, with Dartmouth holding a 7-6 shot advantage.
The game would not remain scoreless for long as the Big Green took a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute. After a corner kick was cleared from the box, Dartmouth did not give up on the play and Hamlin sent a low shot into the box where Tata was perfectly positioned to slip the ball past Sopko for the 1-0 lead.
Just three minutes later Northeastern's Greta Samuelsdottir had Hogan beat but junior Erin Fleischli (San Mateo, Calif.) made the play to block her shot. The Huskies had a great corner kick minutes later but Hogan punched it out.
Northeastern never gave up offensively and put some dangerous balls into the box including a free kick by Vernonica Napoli that hit the crossbar in the 74th minute. Dartmouth still controlled midfield well and the forwards made some good runs. Hamlin nearly got her second assist of the game in the 85th minute when she made a run into the box with a two-on-one play and passed the bal to Sarah Bromley (La Jolla, Calif.) on her left. Bromley was pushed hard off the ball, however, and never got a shot off.
The Big Green held steady down the stretch to take the 1-0 shutout win. Northeastern held a 12-11 shot advantage and each team had three corner kicks. Sopko made three saves while Hogan made two and did a nice job clearing out crosses.
The back line of Fleischli, Aurelia Solomon (Washington, D.C.), Grace Best (Downingtown, Pa.), Melisa Krnjaic (Washington, D.C.) helped Hogan earn the shutout.
Dartmouth heads to the west coast this weekend, taking on #14 San Diego on Friday, Sept. 10 and Pepperdine on Sunday, Sept. 12.
