SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - The Dartmouth women's soccer team picked up a 1-1 double-overtime tie against 17th ranked San Diego tonight on the strength of a Kim Rose (Seaford, N.Y.) goal and five saves by Colleen Hogan (Houston, Texas).
Rose put Dartmouth (1-1-1) ahead in the 62nd minute with a header off a corner kick by senior Melisa Krnjaic (Washington, D.C.) and the lead nearly held up for the win but San Diego (4-1-1) scored with just eight minutes remaining to tie it. San Diego's Brittany Held also scored on a header, hers off a cross from Maggie McGuire.
The game was fairly evenly contested, with San Diego outshooting Dartmouth 10-6, though it was just a one shot difference in regulation, as three of the Toreros attempts came in double-overtime. Hogan stood her ground in goal when it mattered most, making two of her five saves in the second overtime period to help her team earn a result against the nationally-ranked Toreros. Each team had taken four shots in the second half, when Hogan stopped three and each squad scored a goal. The game was physical throughout but play was most even in the second half and the Big Green seemed to get stronger as the game went on according to head coach Angie Hind.
Hind praised her squad for "a tremendous team performance" backstopped by the solid play of Hogan in goal.
Seven Dartmouth players were playing in their home state for the first time time in their career. It also marked the first time the Big Green was not beaten in California, after an 0-3 record previously in the state.
The Big Green looks to go unbeaten on the trip and pick up its first California win this Sunday afternoon, Sept. 12, when it travels to Pepperdine for a 1 p.m. (PST) kick-off.
