MALIBU, CALIF. - A second-half penalty kick proved the difference maker as the Dartmouth women's soccer team took a 2-1 loss at Pepperdine today.
Pepperdine (4-2-1) had taken an early lead in the contest before Dartmouth's (1-2-1) Aly O'Dea got the equalizer, but a penalty kick converted in the 63rd minute for a 2-1 lead held up for the Waves' win.
"The loss was disappointing after a great performance on Friday," said head coach Angie Hind. "I felt we were a bit off the pace and not sharp enough to win today."
It was an extremely physical battle with the teams combining for 29 fouls and each side taking a yellow card during the course of play. Pepperdine ultimately held an 11-6 shot advantage over Dartmouth while Colleen Hogan (Houston, Texas) made four saves for the Green and Roxanne Barker made one for the Waves.
Pepperdine took a 1-0 lead just one minute into the game when Myriah Stockman curled in a free kick from the right side to beat Hogan. Dartmouth kept its composure in a midfield battle from that point on with just one shot for either side Playing just an hour and a half from her hometown, junior Aly O'Dea (Irvine, Calif.) coolly got the equalizer for Dartmouth by looping one over Barker's head to tie it at 1-1 in the 20th minute.
The Waves' Ana Pontes sent a shot wide in the 32nd minute and one minute later O'Dea nearly put the Big Green up, forcing Barker to make her lone save of the game. Pepperdine put two shots on goal that Hogan saved in the final 10 minutes before getting to the half tied at 1-1.
Pepperdine opened the second half with four attempts in the first 10 minutes including two saved by Hogan to keep the game tied. In the 63rd minute two players challenged for a header in the Dartmouth box and the Pepperdine player went down, resulting in a penalty kick. Laura Cole sent one past Hogan in the one-on-one for her fifth goal of the season and a 2-1 Pepperdine lead.
The teams continued to battle down the stretch but with few shots taken either way. O'Dea had the last look of the match with a shot that went high in the 82nd minute and Pepperdine held on to beat the Big Green, 2-1.
The Dartmouth women head back to the East coast and are in action again this Friday, Sept. 17 when they travel to Quinnipiac.
