HAMDEN, Conn. - Rookie Chrissy Lozier (Fairfield, Conn.) scored her first collegiate goal but it was not enough to match Furtuna Velaj's hat trick as the Dartmouth women's soccer team took a 3-1 loss at Quinnipiac today.
Lozier's goal in the 72nd minute had brought the Big Green back into the game after trailing 2-0 at halftime, but still down 2-1, Dartmouth (1-3-1) had to pack the offensive zone, allowing a late Quinnipiac (1-4) breakaway goal.
Dartmouth held just a 10-9 shot advantage, but put seven of its attempts on goal as Quinnipiac goalie Jillian Kelley was forced into six quality saves on the day.
Playing in her home state, sophomore Libby Hamlin (Vernon, Conn.) forced Kelley into service just five minutes into the game when she made an impressive save on what could have been a game-changing early Dartmouth lead. Instead, the Bobcats struck first off a free kick from just outside the box when Velaj, their leading scorer, converted past a Colleen Hogan (Houston, Texas) to the lower left corner in the 21st minute.
Dartmouth countered following the Quinnipiac goal, but the Bobcats managed to add another to the scoreboard before halftime. Velaj struck again with a two-on-one play, taking a feed from Kemesha Woodfine to one-time the ball past Hogan and put her team up 2-0 in the 31st.
The Big Green got on the scoreboard in the 72nd when Lozier, playing just 40 minutes from her hometown, scored off a feed from Hamlin. Hamlin sent a cross into the box for Lozier, who buried one past Kelley to the lower right side to make it 2-1.
With a new shot of life following the Lozier goal, Dartmouth pushed the tempo offensively in search of the tying score. Quinnipiac was able to take advantage of this to score an insurance goal on a breakaway in the 88th minute. It was again Woodfine beating the shorthanded defense to find Velaj inside the box who beat Hogan for the final 3-1.
Dartmouth continues its road swing with a trip to Penn State for a 1 p.m. start this Sunday, Sept. 19.
