State College, Pa. - Rookie Marina Moschitto (Andover, Mass.) scored the game winner to lead the Dartmouth women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over perennial Big Ten Champion Penn State.
Despite being outshot, 28-9, Dartmouth's (2-3-1) defense locked down to knock out Penn State (2-6-1), which has ranked as high as 12th nationally this season. The Big Green actually put more shots on goal than the Nittany Lions, bettering them, 4-2. It was a clean game overall with the teams combining for just 10 fouls, six for Penn State and four for Dartmouth.
Head coach Angie Hind was pleased with her team's response after a loss on Friday afternoon and praised the complete team effort for a full 90 minutes.
Penn State had the first four shots of the game including some good early looks that went just wide of the goal. The Big Green had its chances in the first as well, however, including an attempt by Katie Davis (San Marino, Calif.) that was saved at 29:12. The follow-up attempt by Aly O'Dea (Irvine, Calif.) hit the bottom of the crossbar and ricocheted off the goalie but bounced away from the goal. Junior Erin Fleischli (San Mateo, Calif.) forced PSU goalie Krissy Tribbett into another save in the 38th minute.
After a close first half in which Penn State held just a 7-5 shot advantage, Dartmouth got the eventual game-winner fairly early in the second half. Senior Peyton Tata (Virginia Beach, Va.) sent a cross into the box where Moschitto had slipped past her defender and one-timed it past Tribbett for the 1-0 lead in the 60th minute.
Junior goalie Colleen Hogan (Houston, Texas) was tested in the second half, including just after the Big Green goal when she saved a shot by Tani Costa in the 63rd minute. Dartmouth's O'Dea nearly doubled the lead again in the 67th with a shot saved by Tribbett.
It was a full team defensive effort in the second half, including a sequence of four blocked Penn State shots in just three minutes. Dartmouth's defense also came through against a Penn State free kick in the 86th minute when the wall blocked an attempt from 25 yards out.
Hogan finished with two saves for her second shutout of the season.
Dartmouth returns to the Granite State to face UNH on the road on Thursday, Sept. 23 at 4 p.m. before hosting Brown on Sunday.
