BOXSCORE
DURHAM, N.H. - The University of New Hampshire snapped an 18-game winless streak against the Dartmouth women's soccer team with a 1-0 victory over the Big Green this afternoon.
UNH (4-4-2) got a first-half goal that held up in a fairly evenly contested match to take its first victory over Dartmouth (2-4-1) since the 1991. There had been one tie in the series during that stretch of 17 Dartmouth victories.
"We came out flat in the first half and though the second was better and we pushed, New Hampshire was the better team today," said head coach
Angie Hind.
Dartmouth held a slight 11-9 shot advantage for the game. The Big Green forced UNH keeper Erica Correa into five saves and junior goalie
Colleen Hogan (Houston, Texas) made two for Dartmouth.
The Big Green garnered the game's first shot on goal when Correa was forced to save a
Libby Hamlin (Vernon, Conn.) attempt after a corner kick in the fifth minute. New Hampshire pushed midway through the first half with a series of six attempts in 10 minutes including one saved by Hogan in the 22nd.
The pressure paid off when New Hampshire got the game's first and only goal in the 34th minute when Brooke Duchaney buried one to the top left corner off a feed from Stephanie Gilkenson.
Dartmouth opened the second half aggressively, with
Marina Moschitto (Andover, Mass.) taking two of the team's four early attempts including one on goal saved by Correa.
Erin Fleischli (San Mateo, Calif.) forced another saved by Correa in the 62nd minute before Hogan stopped an attempt by New Hampshire's Monique Lamotte seven minutes later.
The Big Green had a flurry of offense in the closing minutes including two blocked shots and a third saved by Correa all within the span of the 88th minute, but was unable to get the equalizer.
Today's game was the fifth straight road match for the Dartmouth women, who will be back home at Burnham this Sunday at 1 p.m. to host Brown in the Ivy opener for both teams.
