HANOVER, N.H. - Rookie Marina Moschitto (Andover, Mass.) scored her second game-winning-goal of the season to lead the Dartmouth women's soccer team past Brown, 2-1 in the Ivy opener for both teams.
The Big Green (3-4-1, 1-0 Ivy) and the Bears (4-3-1, 0-1 Ivy) battled for the full 90 minutes, though a goal in each half helped Dartmouth take a 2-0 command of the game. Junior goalkeeper Colleen Hogan (Houston, Texas) made five saves and had a solid day as did her back line, with only a penalty kick in the 82nd minute marring the clean sheet.
Dartmouth held a slight, 12-11 shot advantage in the game while Brown had seven corner kicks to Dartmouth's one. Credit to the Big Green's defense as the Bears did not score on any of those attempts and did not get a goal during the normal flow of game play.
Brown started the game with significant offensive pressure, taking three corner kicks in the first 10 minutes. Dartmouth countered with two good looks soon after though, with Aly O'Dea (Irvine, Calif.) sending a header a touch high and Moschitto putting a shot just wide.
The Big Green's first and only corner kick of the game came in the 24th minute when freshman Chrissy Lozier (Fairfield, Conn.) sent the ball into the box. It was bobbled around before a Brown defender cleared it right out to sophomore Aurelia Solomon (Washington, D.C.). Solomon was composed, trapped the ball and fired a rocket from about 25 yards out into the far corner for the 1-0 lead. It was the first collegiate goal for Solomon.
Brown had a dangerous sequence in the 32nd minute when Hogan punched out a cross by Louisa Pitney that had turned into a shot and then cleared a Bears' corner kick. Gina Walker took a shot on goal in the 38th minute but Hogan was there to snag the dangerous attempt, taking the 1-0 lead into the half.
After a slow start to the second half, Dartmouth took a 2-0 lead in the 58th minute when Moschitto connected off a perfect cross from sophomore Grace Best (Downingtown, Pa.). Moschitto was at the top left corner of the box and one-timed it past a diving MC Barrett to the far right of the goal.
The Bears countered after the restart with a shot on goal by rookie Mika Siegelman but Hogan was there to corral a rather routine save. Dartmouth countered with a header by Peyton Tata (Virginia Beach, Va.) but Barrett made the save.
Brown pushed the tempo as time was slipping away in the contest and earned the first corner of the half in the 73rd minute, but it was cleared out. Another corner in the 78th led to a shot by Alison Mullin but she sent it wide.
The Bears were granted a penalty kick in the 82nd minute after a foul in the box. Siegelman stepped up and Hogan guessed right, but left a second too soon and was able to tip the ball, but it skipped in off her fingertip to make it a 2-1 game.
The Bears continued to push but Dartmouth was able to hold tight for the final eight minutes to take the critical 2-1 win.
Dartmouth will not play again until this coming Saturday, Oct. 2 when it hits the road to take on Ivy foe Princeton for a 3:30 p.m. start.
