HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth women's hockey team shutout Rensselaer, 3-0, on Saturday at Thompson Arena. The Big Green used two power play goals and an empty netter to secure the victory. It marked the third straight win for Dartmouth, and improved the team to 12-8-0 overall and 8-6-0 in the conference. RPI dropped to 9-10-6 overall and 7-6-1 in league play.
Dartmouth was the more aggressive team from the opening period, taking 15 shots in the first frame. RPI managed only five shots in the first period. Junior Jenna Hobeika (Alpine, N.J.) scored 4:40 into the game on a power play. After taking passes from sophomore Sasha Nanji (Markham, Ont.) and junior Reagan Fischer (Irma, Alta.), Hobeika took a shot that floated over the goaltender's glove, off the pipe and into the net. The goal withstood a video review to give the Big Green a 1-0 lead.
After heading into the first intermission with a one-goal advantage, Dartmouth struck 26 seconds into the second period. Again on the power play, junior Geneva Kliman (Toronto, Ont.) fired a shot which goaltender Sonja van der Bliek deflected away. Sophomore Camille Dumais (Beaconsfield, Que.) was ready for the rebound and stuck it into the back of the net. It marked Dumais eighth goal of the season. The Big Green added an empty net goal with 20 second remaining in the game off the stick of senior Amanda Trunzo (Andover, Minn.).
The physical contest saw Dartmouth called for six penalties and the Engineers called for seven. Freshman Lindsay Holdcroft (Pittsburgh, Pa.) earned the win and the shutout for the Big Green, making nine saves. Van der Bliek took the loss for RPI, making 31 saves. In all, Dartmouth had 34 shots on goal compared to only nine for the Engineers.
The Big Green go back on the road next Friday, Jan. 28, when they play at Yale at 7 p.m.
