HANOVER, N.H. — Just two weeks into the basketball season and the Dartmouth men boast two players who have earned the Ivy League's Rookie of the Week honor. This week the honor was shared by freshman forward Gabas Maldunas and Cornell's Shonn Miller.
Maldunas (Panevezys, Lithuania) came off the bench to register his first career double-double in a 66-62 victory over Bryant on Saturday, tallying 15 points while grabbing 10 rebounds, not to mention blocking three shots. He went 6-for-6 in the first half from the floor, then drained 3-of-4 at the line in the final 25 seconds to help secure the Big Green's first win of the young season. Last Wednesday, Maldunas provided nine points and seven boards in a 12-point loss to Vermont, and he finished the week averaging 12.0 points and 8.5 rebounds while connecting on 75 percent (9-of-12) of his field goals.
The previous week, freshman forward Jvonte Brooks (Santee, Calif.) took home the weekly honor. The two rookie awards match Dartmouth's total for the past two seasons combined.
This week Dartmouth (1-2) travels to play in the Great Alaska Shootout hosted by Alaska-Anchorage. In the opening round, the Big Green will be paired up against San Francisco (4-1) on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. Alaska Standard Time, which is 12:30 a.m. on Thursday on the East Coast. The game will be televised live on both Fox College Sports and the YES Network. Complete TV listings for all the games can be found on the Alaska-Anchorage web site at GoSeawolves.com.
