HANOVER, N.H. — Dartmouth freshman John Golden, a 6-6 wing from Freehold, N.J., was chosen as the Ivy League's co-Rookie of the Week along with Cornell's Galan Cancer. He is the third different Big Green player to earn the award this year, joining forwards Jvonte Brooks and Gabas Maldunas, the latter of which has been selected twice.
Golden began the week by hitting 4-of-5 shots with a three-pointer, scoring 11 points and grabbing five rebounds in a 56-51 loss at IPFW on Dec. 13. On Saturday, the rookie was instrumental in helping Dartmouth pull off a 62-54 upset home win over Elon by registering his first career double-double with 10 points and a season-high 11 rebounds. His biggest play in the game came with just over a minute remaining when he stole a pass and went the length of the floor for the layup, giving the Big Green an eight-point lead and keeping the Phoenix from making a serious late run.
Since starting the season 7-for-37 (.189) from the floor, Golden has hit 14-of-25 (.560) field goals over the last five games while averaging 8.2 points. He also has led the team in rebounding in half of Dartmouth's 10 games thus far.
Dartmouth (3-7), looking to string together consecutive victories for the first time since February of 2009, begins a three-game swing through the state of New York this evening when the Big Green play at Colgate (4-5) at 7 p.m.
