Starting Five
1. Tonight's game is the second of a three-game homestand
for the Big Green. The current homestand is the longest of the season. The Big
Green haven't played more than three home games at a time since the 2008-09
season when it played four straight at Leede Arena.
2. Today's meeting is the fourth meeting between the Bulldogs and Big Green. The teams first started playing during the 2008-09 season, the first season in its transition to Division I. The Bulldogs will be eligible for postseason action next season.
3. Dartmouth is looking for its first home win of the season after falling to New Hampshire in its home opener last week. The Big Green has an all-time record of 285-142 at Leede Arena and has only had eight seasons with a losing home record in 38 seasons.
4. Big Green freshman Tia Dawson and Kamala Thompson are quickly becoming Dartmouth's top rebounders. For the season, the pair has combined for 57 of Dartmouth's 207 total rebounds. Additionally, the four rookies that have seen game action are averaging 2.9 rebounds/game.
5. Faziah Steen continues to be the Big Green's workhorse. She recorded her fourth game in double figures against UNH with 15 points and is Dartmouth's lone player in double figures with 16.0 points per game. She has led Dartmouth in scoring in 10 of Dartmouth's last 16 games, going back to last season.
Dartmouth vs. Bryant
Notables
- Dartmouth and Bryant are meeting for the fourth
consecutive season in tonight's game. The Big Green holds a 3-0 series
advantage. This will be Bryant's second trip to Leede Arena.
-Bryant will be playing its second Ivy League opponent in tonight's contest. The Bulldogs defeated Brown at home on Nov. 22 and will also take on Columbia on Dec. 30. The squads also have a common opponent in Colgate. Bryant defeated Colgate 76-74 in its season-opener on Nov. 11. Dartmouth also defeated Colgate this season.
-The Bulldogs and Big Green each have a player from Maryland. Bryant's Danielle Douglass hails from Silver Springs, Md., while Big Green sophomore Nicola Zimmer is a Chevy Chase, Md., native.
A Win Would ...
1. Give Dartmouth's its first home win of the season and
first since defeating Cornell (Feb. 19) last season. Dartmouth posted six home
wins last season.
2. Extend Dartmouth's series advantage to 4-0 over the Bulldogs. If that should happen, it will mark the second time this season Dartmouth has remained perfect against an opponent. The Big Green's win over Colgate moved them to 11-0 over the Raiders.
3. Snap Dartmouth's current two-game skid. This season, Dartmouth hasn't lost more than two games in a row and its win over Colgate snapped a seven-game losing streak, dating back to last season.
Scouting Bryant
Bryant enters tonight's game with a 4-3 record after falling
to Quinnipiac, 67-56, on Saturday (Dec. 3).
Katie Whittington leads the Bryant offense and is averaging 11.8 points
per game while Naama Ankoma-Mensa is also in double figures with 11.0 points
per game. Meredith Soper leads the Bulldogs rebounding efforts pulling down 8.3
rebounds per game. Bryant, which is in the fourth year of its reclassification
to Division I, finished last season 10-19 and returns 11 letterwinners and four
starters. Head coach Mary Burke is in her 21st season at Bryant and owns a
280-287 career record. The Bulldogs will be eligible for postseason competition
starting with the 2012-13 season.
Old Skool vs. Old
Skool
When Dartmouth coach Chris Wielgus and Bryant coach Mary
Burke take the sidelines, they will have a combined 49 years of coaching
experience between them. Burke has been at Bryant for 20 years and Wielgus has
29 years of experience between her stints at Dartmouth and Fordham. That's
quite a bit of basketball knowledge on the sidelines.
Staying at Home
Tonight's game is the second game in Dartmouth's three-game
homestand. The Big Green's three-game homestand is the longest the Big Green
will be at Leede Arena this season. Dartmouth hasn't played more than three
consecutive home games since the 2008-09 season when they played four straight
Ivy League games. In head coach Chris Wielgus' second tenure Dartmouth has only
played more than four consecutive home games once and that was during the
1998-99 season when they played seven straight home games from Dec. 29-Jan. 19.
Block Party
Freshman Tia Dawson was rejecting shots left and right
against New Hampshire. She set a new career-high with four blocks against the
Wildcats. Her four blocks was the most by a Big Green player this season and
are the most for Dartmouth since Sasha Dosenko posted eight rejections against
Wagner last season. As a team, the Big Green had a team-best seven blocked
shots on the night, the most this season and since the Wagner game from last
season when the Big Green had 10 rejections.
Steen Continues to Lead
the Way
Junior Faziah Steen continues to lead the Big Green
offense. The team captain posted her
fourth game in double figures with 15 points in Dartmouth's loss to New
Hampshire. She has posted double digits in four of Dartmouth's contests this
season and was in double figures in three straight contests. When Steen is Dartmouth's
leading scorer the team is 2-3 and when Steen scores in double figures
Dartmouth is 2-2.
Zimmer Dishes
Sophomore guard Nicola Zimmer had a career night
against New Hampshire with a career-best seven assists. Zimmer's seven assists
are the most for a Dartmouth player since former Big Green player Cassie Cooper
recorded seven against Brown last season.
