HANOVER, N.H. — Freshmen Melissa Matsuoka (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Sabrina Stewart (London, England) both got crucial wins in singles and doubles as the No. 64 Dartmouth women's tennis team beat Virginia Tech 4-3 in a barn-burner of a match that had fans in the Boss Tennis Center on the edge of their seats. Dartmouth and the Hokies are both now 2-3 for the season.
Dartmouth won the doubles point, and that proved to be the difference, as Matsuoka and senior tri-captain Molly Scott (Trabuco Cyn, Calif.) won at No. 1 and Stewart and sophomore Jeri Reichel (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) won the deciding match 9-8 (10-8) in a cliffhanger at No. 3.
In singles, sophomore Sarah Leonard (Norwalk, Conn.) put the first singles point on the board for the Big Green, followed by Stewart at No. 5. Matsuoka's win at No. 2 proved to be the deciding point as she overcame 3-4 deficits in both sets to defeat Martha Blakely 6-4, 6-4.
Dartmouth returns to action at the ECAC Winter Championships at Princeton on Feb. 18.
