HANOVER, N.H. — The ninth-ranked Dartmouth women's hockey came out flat on Friday, and Clarkson took advantage, winning at Thompson Arena, 4-1. The Golden Knights took the first game in the best-of-three series after gaining a 3-0 lead in the first period. The loss dropped the Big Green to 19-10 on the season, and Clarkson improved to 14-15-6.
If Dartmouth could redo any part of the game it would be the first period. The Golden Knights controlled the opening stanza, and had a 3-0 lead heading into the first intermission. Brittany Styner scored the first goal after collecting a rebound and stuffing it back into the net.
With four minutes remaining in the period, the Golden Knights struck again off the stick of Danielle Skirrow. She swiped the puck away from a Big Green defender and then beat freshman Lindsay Holdcroft (Pittsburgh, Pa.) to score the goal. With under a minute remaining in the period, Gabrielle Kosziwka scored off a rebound to give Clarkson the three-goal lead.
In the second period, the Golden Knights stretched their lead to 4-0 when Kali Gillanders deflected a shot into the back of the net. Dartmouth finally got on the board with two minutes left in the second off the stick of junior Jenna Hobeika (Alpine, N.J.). Juniors Kelly Foley (Boston, Mass.) and Reagan Fischer (Irma, Alta.) assisted on the goal, and it marked Hobeika's 10th goals of the season.
Clarkson outshot the Big Green in the contest, 26-25. Holdcroft played well despite allowing four goals, making 22 saves. Dartmouth committed only three penalties, but the Golden Knights scored two power play goals out of the three opportunities. Clarkson had five penalties, but the Big Green could not score with the man advantage.
The two teams play on Saturday, Feb. 26, at 2 p.m. for the second game in the series. Dartmouth needs to win the contest to force a third and deciding game on Sunday.
