NEW YORK, N.Y. — With singles wins from senior tri-captains Molly Scott (Trabuco Cyn, Calif.) and Georgiana Smyser (Houston, Texas) and freshmen Melissa Matsuoka (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Sabrina Stewart (London, England), the Dartmouth women's tennis team won its opening Ivy League match on Friday with a 4-3 win over Columbia. The Big Green are 9-7 overall and 1-0 in the Ivy League, while the Lions fall to 9-8 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
Dartmouth got into an early hole by losing the doubles point, 2-1. The first doubles team of Matsuoka and Scott got the lone win for Dartmouth, beating Nicole Barnik and Natasha Makarova, 8-4. Although the Big Green played the Lions at the ECAC Winter Championships in February and downed Columbia 4-2, the doubles hadn't been played in that match.
The Big Green jumped out to an early lead in singles by winning the first set on every court, and Smyser quickly evened the score with a commanding 6-2, 6-0 victory at sixth singles. Stewart, returning from a shoulder injury that had sidelined her since the ECAC tourney, put the next point on the board with a three-set victory at No. 5. Matsuoka won in straight sets at No. 3 to push Dartmouth to a 3-1 lead. Sophomore Sarah Leonard (Norwalk, Conn.) was edged in three sets at second singles by Bianca Sanon, an opponent Leonard had bested at the ECACs. Scott clinched the win for Dartmouth with a 6-0, 5-7, 6-3 victory at No. 1 over Bartnik, a former top 10 USTA junior player who was a blue-chip recruit. Senior tri-captain Ryan Reichel (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) was at 4-5 in the third set at No. 4 when Scott clinched, and ultimately dropped her match 6-7, 6-3, 6-4.
Dartmouth returns to action against Cornell on Saturday in Ithaca at 12 p.m.
