GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP, N.J. — Junior Peter Williamson (Hanover, N.H.) narrowly escaped Galloway National Golf Course with medalist honors at the Ivy League Men's Golf Championship on Sunday, but his 10-over 223 was just enough to hold off the field for his second title in three years. He is just the seventh Ivy League golfer to win multiple titles, and first since Princeton's Steve Dana won consecutive titles in 1993-94.
Williamson held the lead after both the first and second rounds, and by shooting one-under over the front nine today during the final round, was in prime position to win the title. But a bogey at 10 and double bogeys on 13 and 15 dropped him into third place behind Penn's Scott Williams and Yale's Tom McCarthy, the latter of which made a strong charge up the leaderboard at four-under par on the day after a birdie on 10 and an eagle on 11.
“I really thought I lost it around 13 or 14 today with a couple of bogeys and Tom [McCarthy] playing amazingly,” Williamson said. “I didn't think I had the number today, the course is tough down the stretch, but I thought playoff at best.”
But just as Williamson had his struggles down the stretch, so did Williams and McCarthy. Like Williamson, Williams found trouble on 13 and 15, taking a triple on 13 and a double on 15 to fall out of contention. McCarthy, on the other hand, bogeyed three of the final six holes to fall a single stroke behind Williamson.
Williamson, who earned first-team All-Ivy honors for the third straight year, was named the Ivy League Player of the Year for the second time in his career. Also earning All-Ivy recognition for the Big Green was sophomore Andrew Jankowski (Elkins, N.H.), who earned a spot on the second team by tying for 11th place with a 20-over 233.
Sophomore James Pleat (Nashua, N.H.) matched Williamson's five-over 76 on Sunday as the Big Green's low round of the day, finishing the championship with a 243 (+30) to tie for 28th place along with senior Davis Mullany (Great Barrington, Mass.). Junior Teddy Overton (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) had his best round of the tournament over the final 18 holes with an eight-over 79 to wrap up the Big Green group in 38th with a 254 (+41).
Yale ran away with the team title by 20 strokes ahead of three-time defending champion, Columbia, with a three-round total of 908 (+56). The Bulldogs entered the day one stroke behind Penn but came up with the best round of the tournament by far with a four-over 288 today. The Quakers fell back to third place, while Dartmouth climbed back up to fourth with a 940 (+88).
With the team title in hand, Yale earned the league's automatic bid to the 2011 NCAA Championship. The Bulldogs will compete at one of six regional sites on May 19-21.
