CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Dartmouth softball team saw its season end at Harvard's Solders Field with the Crimson taking both games of the doubleheader. Harvard came from behind to win the first game, 10-9 and then solidly took the second game, 10-1. The Big Green finished the year with a 17-22 record, 10-10 in the Ivy League. The Crimson won the North Division title and holds a 34-14 overall record, 14-4 in the league.
In the opening game each team plated a run in the first inning before Harvard pulled ahead with one more run in the second. Dartmouth tied the game and then took the lead with seven runs in the third.
Meghan Everett began things off with a single before Noelle Ramirez received a one-out walk to put runners and first and second. Molly Khalil was also issued a walk as Holly Hubert came to bat with the bases loaded. Hubert singled to center field as Everett tallied the first run of the frame, Ramirez advanced to third and Khalil to second. That hit knocked starter Julia Moore from the circle as Mari Zumbro came in relief for Harvard.
An illegal pitch moved the runners over as Kat Hicks came to the plate and with one swing of her bat, brought three runs across with her sixth home run of the season. Hillary Barker was walked and came around on a Katie Adams double to left center. Adams scored the last run of the inning as the Big Green batted around and Everett singled to short, bringing Adams home.
Unfortunately the lead would not hold as the home team put up seven of its own runs in the bottom of the fourth. Four doubles and two home runs in the inning chased Evan Gray from the game as Hicks came on in relief.
Dartmouth tied the game in the top of the sixth when Hicks was issued a bases loaded walk but a two-out hit by the Crimson in the bottom of the seventh plated the winning run.
Everett was 3-for-5 with two runs and one RBI with Audrey Kolodziej and Hubert both garnering two hits. Gray went 3.1 innings with five earned runs, Hicks also went 3.1 innings with four earned runs and one strikeout and unfortunately Barker picked up the loss as she gave up the game winning run.
In the nightcap, Dartmouth take a 1-0 lead after Everett walked and advanced to third when Kolodziej doubled to left center. A groundout by Barker brought Everett home for the short lead.
Harvard leveled the score thanks to an RBI double in the bottom of the first and then plated a pair of runs on an RBI single to center to start the second. Two more RBI base hits moved the Crimson lead to 5-1 after two full as Zumbro helped stretch the lead to 6-1 with an RBI single in the third and a two-run single from Ellen Macadam pushed the host's lead to 8-1 after three full innings.
The score stayed at 8-1 into the bottom of the sixth where Macadam led off with a single to short and advanced to second on a throwing error. A sacrifice bunt in the next at bat proved unnecessary as Kasey Lange followed with a walk-off, two-run homer to end the game an inning early with a 10-1 final.
Kolodziej, Hubert, Hicks and Britta McOmber were the only Big Green players to get hits in the contest. Barker took the loss as she went 2.1 innings with five earned runs and two strikeouts.
