BLOOMINGTON, IND. — On the first day of the Division I women's outdoor track and field East Preliminary Round, senior Alex Tanner (Baltimore, Md.) advanced to the quarterfinals in the 400-meter hurdles.
Tanner competed in the opening round of the 400-meter hurdles, which featured 48 competitors. The athletes were split into six heats, and the top three times in each heat along with the next six fastest times advanced to the quarterfinals. Tanner did not finish in the top three in her heat, but had the fastest time of any competitor who did not finish in the top three of their heat.
She finished with a time of 58.84, which was the 14th-fastest time out of all the competitors. Tanner will run in one of three heats in the quarterfinals on Friday at 5:30 p.m. The top three finishers in each heat and the next three fastest times will advance to the NCAA Championship.
In the 10,000 meters, freshman Caitie Meyer (Weston, Mass.) took 17th with a time of 34:03.21. The top 12 finishers qualified for the NCAA Championships. The 12th qualifier finished with a time of 33:56.25. Meyer set a new school record with the finish, the previous mark was held by Ryan Fagan '02 at 34:11.03.
In the 1,500 meters, freshman Arianna Vailas (Manchester, N.H.) was one of 48 competitors looking to advance to the quarterfinals on Saturday. A total of 24 athletes advanced to the next round, but Vailas was not one of them. She did not finish in the top five in her heat or have one of the next four fastest times. She finished the race at 4:31.16.
Junior Christina Supino (Windham, N.H.) was looking to advance to the quarterfinals in the 800 meters, but came up short. She finished with a time of 2:11.84. The slowest time that advanced to the quarterfinals was 2:09.29 by Brigitte Mania of Connecticut.
Besides Tanner competing on Friday, the Big Green will have senior Jaclyn Wypler (Ridgewood, N.J.) in the javelin, senior Malina Simmers (Anchorage, Alaska) in the triple jump and junior Alexi Pappas (Alameda, Calif.) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
