HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth women's basketball team played a good first half, but couldn't keep pace with the Bears in the second half, dropping a 74-50 contest to Brown on Friday (Jan. 27) at Leede Arena.
Junior guard Faziah Steen (Detroit, Mich.) posted her ninth consecutive game in double figures with a team-best 15 points and was joined in double figures by senior forward Sasha Dosenko (Kiev, Ukraine) who added 14 points for her third double-figure game of the season. Freshman center Tia Dawson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) led the defense with a game-high 12 rebounds.
The game was a tale of two halves for Dartmouth. The Big Green shot 36.7 percent (11-of-30) in the first half and held Brown (11-6, 2-1 Ivy League) to 31 percent (9-of-29) shooting from the floor, but in the second half the roles were reversed, as Brown shot 40 percent (12-of-30) while Dartmouth was only 29.6 percent (8-of-27) from the floor.
Trailing by just four points, 32-27, coming out of the halftime break, the Bears opened the second stanza with a quick 7-2 spurt which gave them an 11-point lead and their first double-digit lead of the contest.
Dartmouth (2-14, 0-2 Ivy League) battled with Brown mightily on the defensive end but was undone by untimely turnovers and three-pointers early in the second half. Brown's Sheila Dixon had 13 of her 15 points in the second half, including two triples that helped the Bears keep the lead in double figures for the remainder of the contest.
Freshman guard Kamala Thompson (Seldon, N.Y.) was effective off the bench for Dartmouth. In 20 minutes, she posted six points, two rebounds and was 2-of-2 from the free throw line. Thompson's offense proved a nice complement to the scoring of Steen and Dosenko.
Dartmouth, who had outrebounded its last three opponents, struggled on the glass and was outrebounded by a 46-35 margin, allowing 40 or more rebounds for the first time in three games.
The first half was fairly evenly played. Dartmouth, who has struggled with turnovers this season, only committed six first half turnovers and had 12 points in the paint to go with 11 bench points. The only difference in the half was at the free throw line. Dartmouth sent the Bears to the line 10 times and they converted eight of their free throws while Dartmouth only got to the line once.
With Dartmouth trailing 20-12 midway through the first half, Dosenko scored five unanswered points, including completing a three-point play, to get the lead to three points at the 7:57 mark, which was as close as the Big Green would get the remainder of the contest.
Dartmouth closes the weekend on Sunday (Jan, 29) when the Yale Bulldogs make the trip to Leede Arena. The contest is scheduled to tipoff at 2 p.m.
