ITHACA, N.Y. - Sophomore Janae Dunchack (Northern Cambria, Pa.) of the Dartmouth women's indoor track & field team claimed the 2012 Ivy League individual championship in the pentathlon Saturday afternoon at Cornell's Barton Hall. The title came in the first day of competition at the league's Heps Championship meet.
Dunchack claimed the top spot and 10-team points for the Big Green with the third-best showing ever in the event by a Dartmouth athlete. Her 3,733 combined points in the event edged out teammate senior Priscilla Trojano (West Bridgewater, Mass.) who finished second with 3,500 points.
It was her second year in a row that Dunchack won the Pentathlon after also climaing the title as a freshman at last year's Heps in New York City.
The second-year athlete claimed first in both the 60-meter hurdles and long jump in the five-event competition.
Dartmouth has 21 team points through the first day of scored events.
Sophomore Abbey D'Agostino (Topsfield, Mass.) took home eight points with a second-place finish in the 5,000 meters by the absolute slimmest of margins. Brown's Heidi Cladwell took the individual title by one-hundredth of a second over D'Agostino, 16:38.01 to 16:38.02.
In the mile, D'Agostino finished first in her heat and qualified second overall in 4:52.47 for Sunday's final.
Senior Christina Supino (Windham, N.H.) will move on to Sunday's finals of the 800 after qualifying second in the preliminaries. Supino won her heat in 2:10.45 to earn one of the eight spots in tomorrow afternoon's final.
Senior Christina Alexander (Austin, Texas) and freshman Cathy Liebowitz (Plainfield, N.H.) claimed points in the scoring of the weight throw. Alexander claimed two points with a fifth-place finish with a throw of 53-5.75/16.30m. Liebowitz followed with a measurement of 52-1.75/15.89m.
