HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth men's soccer team had its eight-game unbeaten streak snapped in a 3-1 deficit to Boston University on Tuesday evening at Burnham Field.
The deficit moves the Big Green to 7-3-1 overall with an important meeting with defensing Ivy League Champion Penn on Saturday evening. The Big Green jumped up in the NSCAA Coaches Poll this week and are now receiving 12 votes. Boston, who today was ranked No. 23 by the NSCAA improves to 9-2-1, 4-0-0 Patriot League.
"I think there is obviously a very disappointed team right now in our locker room," said head coach Chad Riley. "I think a game like that leaves a very bad taste in your mouth. We have to let it sting a little tonight and use as a log on the fire for our preparations for Penn."
Boston took a one-goal lead in the fifth minute after a free kick was sent into the box and Jeroen Blugh passed the ball to Felix De Bona for the early tally. The Terriers then scored their second goal before the 10-minute mark of the contest on a cross by Bjarki Benediktsson to David Amirani that sneaked around Dartmouth sophomore keeper James Hickok.
In the 27th minute after a foul was called the Terriers in midfield, Kelvin Madzongwe was issued a direct red card, leaving the visitors with 10 players the rest of the game.
With 41 seconds remaining until the break, a defensive miscue by the Big Green allowed BU to score its third unanswered goal. Parker Powell was credited with goal after a Dartmouth defender attempted to send a back pass to Hickok who misplayed the ball.
Midway through the second frame sophomore Ricardo Gomez scored the lone goal for the Big Green after receiving a corner kick served by senior Stefan Defregger to the goalmouth.
Dartmouth finished the contest with a, 14-4, edge in shots, forcing BU keeper Nick Thomson to make six saves.
"You always evaluate the performance, and to be honest 95 percent was great — our energy, ball control, chances we created, — we just needed to be a little more sharper in both boxes," continued Riley.
"I felt we were really coming into the game getting some chances, and their player was sent off and from then on in it was one-way traffic. Even though we surrendered three goals, we made enough good chances to win this game."
Dartmouth will host Penn on Saturday evening at 7 p.m.
Additional Chad Riley Quotes:
"Credit to Boston and its Goalkeeper who had a fantastic performance. We have to do a better job staying composed to finish our chances, but we are creating great chances and the goals will come."
"I have complete faith in this team, the captains, and senior class leadership. We haven't had a bad day of training this year and I know we are going to bounce back with an unbelievable performance on Saturday. Now we just have to let this sting, and then the sun will come up tomorrow and we start preparing for Penn."
