HANOVER, N.H. – On Dig Pink/Disco Night and the first night of Homecoming Weekend, the Dartmouth volleyball team defeated Princeton in five sets by scores of 25-19, 25-19, 22-25, 18-25, 15-11. The Big Green improved to 13-4 and 4-2 in Ivy League action, while Princeton dipped to 9-7 and 4-2 in conference play. The only other Ancient Eight team that the Tigers fell to so far this season is Yale.
“I'm really excited to get the win tonight,” said head coach Erin Lindsey. “We came out strong and played some of the best volleyball we have played all year during the first two sets. Princeton didn't play their very best at first, but then turned it on for the third and fourth sets, so we had to make adjustments. During the fifth set, we were focused and aggressive and I am proud of the adjustments that we had to make to win. Sara Lindquist put up a big block, and Paige Caridi and Emily Astarita had very strong performances. As a team, we had a great night.”
Five consecutive Princeton points started the match, but back-to-back kills by Astarita got the Big Green back on track and, before long, the score was tied at eight. Following a small run by the Tigers, Dartmouth tied the score at 12 and took its first lead of the set off an error by the opponent. After going on a four-point rally (18-13), Princeton was able to tie the score at 18. With one more tie at 19, the Green scored six unanswered points off a kill apiece by Caridi and senior Alex Schoenberger, and four errors by the Tigers to secure the come-from-behind victory.
It was the team from the Upper Valley who had the upper hand at the start of set two, scoring eight straight points until Princeton was able to get on the board with a kill. Although the Tigers threatened to close the gap a number of times, the Green and White led from start to finish. Two kills put Dartmouth at match point and it was held there while the Tigers got one point closer before a kill by freshman Sara Lindquist ended the set.
The third set was closer than the previous two, with eight ties before the score got to 10. From there, Princeton took a two-point lead that it was able to hold for the majority of the set. An ace by junior Kayden Cook put the Big Green down just one point (19-18), but a pair of errors on Dartmouth's side of the net allowed the Tigers to get that much closer to victory (21-18). The Big Green crept closer and got within one point off a kill by Caridi (23-22), but a kill by Princeton and an error by the home team allowed the Tigers to earn their first win of the night.
With two sets to Princeton's one, the intensity and aggression increased on both sides of the net at the beginning of the fourth. What started off as a close set turned into one favoring the Tigers, which got as far as seven points ahead (18-11) before the Big Green were able to close the gap slightly. Dartmouth was able to get within five (23-18) following a kill by Astarita and three Princeton errors, but two errors by the home team allowed the Tigers to secure a 25-18 victory and send the match to the decisive fifth set.
In the final set, Princeton got an early lead off three consecutive kills by Kendall Peterkin, the Ivy League leader in kills (4-1) before Dartmouth turned things around with four ties and taking the lead off two kills by Caridi (10-8). A kill on the other side of the net put the Tigers within one, but the Big Green countered with a kill apiece by Astarita and Lindquist (12-9). An error by Princeton took the score to 14-11 and a kill by sophomore Molly Kornfeind ended the set with a victory.
Both Astarita and Caridi recorded double-doubles; Astarita had a team-leading 23 kills and 11 digs, while Caridi had 21 kills and 10 digs. Sophomore Stacey Benton led with her 51 assists.
The Big Green return to Leede tomorrow with a 5 p.m. match against Penn.
