HANOVER, N.H. – The night after defeating Princeton in five sets, the Dartmouth volleyball team fell to Penn by scores of 21-25, 23-25, 25-19, 17-25. The Green dipped to 13-5 and 4-3 in Ivy League play, while the Quakers improved to 6-12 and 3-4 in conference action.
“We're obviously disappointed that we weren't able to come out with the win, but Penn played very well tonight,” head coach Erin Lindsey said. “They put up a very strong block and our hitters were struggling to find places to score. They definitely won the serve-and-pass battle and were bringing very tough serves and our passers did a very nice job handling them, but ultimately, we couldn't pick up their off-speed shots.”
Six ties opened the first set, but Penn went on a four-point run (14-10) following a kill and three Dartmouth errors to give it a lead that would last right until the end of the set. A pair of Quaker errors put the Big Green within three (23-20), and a kill by sophomore Stacey Benton allowed the home team to remain within three points following a Penn kill, but another kill by the away team ended the set swiftly.
Although the Quakers led for the majority of the second set, it remained closer than the first with 12 ties. A kill by senior Alex Schoenberger tied the score at 19 and one more by the Big Green senior gave Dartmouth its third lead of the set that was further increased following an error by the opponent (21-19). The score was, once again, tied with back-to-back Penn kills and the lead was given back to the Quakers after two Dartmouth errors. A kill by sophomore Molly Kornfeind got the Green and White within one (23-22), but an ace and a kill put another victory in the Quakers' hands.
The third set started in Dartmouth's favor, with three points scored off a Penn error and two kills by junior Paige Caridi. The Big Green went on a three-point rally after two Caridi kills and an ace by sophomore Julia Lau to give them a 7-3 edge that would slowly be lessened by the Quakers as the set went on. The first tie of the set occurred after a kill by the opponent (15-15) and the two teams would tie again at 17 before Dartmouth scored six unanswered points off two Penn errors, two aces and a kill by Kornfeind and a kill by Schoenberger (22-17). Following two more Quaker points, a kill by junior Kara Lujan secured the 25th point.
Penn took the lead in the fourth set, an edge it held for the majority of the set. The Big Green were able to tie the score twice following a five-point run courtesy of two kills by Kornfeind, one by Caridi and two errors on the other side of the net. From there, the Quakers started to pull away, getting as far as eight points ahead. Two kills by Lujan were the last Dartmouth points scored before a kill by the opponent ended the match.
“It is a good learning match for us,” continued Lindsey, “and shows us what we need to do to continue to be consistent and compete with the best teams in the league.”
Caridi and sophomore Emily Astarita both recorded double-doubles for the second time this weekend; Caridi had 14 kills and 13 digs, while Astarita had 11 kills and 10 digs. Benton had 31 assists to lead the team and Kornfeind had two of the Big Green's three aces.
The Big Green will next go on a five-match, five-state road trip, starting with a stop in Cambridge on Friday, Oct. 25 for a 7 p.m. match against Harvard.
