CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – At its only match of the weekend and its first of five consecutive road contests, the Dartmouth volleyball team fell to Harvard by scores of 13-25, 20-25, 18-25 on Friday evening. The Big Green dipped to 13-6 and 4-4 in Ivy League action, while the Crimson improved to 13-4 overall and 6-2 in conference play. Almost a full month ago, Dartmouth opened Ivy play with a 3-1 victory over Harvard at home.
"Harvard came out firing from the service line and did a really nice job running their offense," head coach Erin Lindsey said. "We couldn't pass well enough to find our groove. We will get back to the gym and get better next week."
After Harvard won the first two points, Dartmouth took its first lead off a kill by junior Kara Lujan and two Crimson errors (4-3). There were three ties before the eighth point, but Harvard then went on a seven-point run (16-8) that was ended following an error on that side of the net. Lujan and freshman Sara Lindquist got in some last minute kills, but after controlling the majority of the set, the Crimson shut things down down.
Dartmouth returned to the court for the second set more focused, keeping the score closer than the first. A kill by sophomore Emily Astarita started things off and, after a four-point rally by the Crimson, the Big Green slowly caught up to get within one point a handful of times (10-11). A Crimson error and an ace by sophomore Danielle Glinka put Dartmouth within reach (15-17) before five Harvard points almost ended the set (23-17). The Green continued to battle, with two Harvard errors and an Astarita kill keeping the Upper Valley team in the match (23-20), but two Crimson kills gave Harvard its second victory.
Starting with a four-point deficit in the third set, Dartmouth tied the score at eight off a kill by Astarita and took its first lead since the first set after a Harvard error and a kill by sophomore Stacey Benton (10-8). The Crimson turned things around, tying the score and taking advantage of Dartmouth errors to get ahead. A kill ended the set in Harvard's favor.
Astarita led the Big Green with her 10 kills and five digs and Benton was first on the team with 20 assists. Glinka, senior Alex Schoenberger and junior Paige Caridi each had an ace, while Caridi also led with her 10 digs.
Dartmouth's next stop will be in New Haven, Connecticut, when it plays a 7 p.m. match against Yale on Halloween.
