NEW HAVEN, Conn. – On a chilly Halloween night in Yale's Payne Whitney Gym, the Dartmouth volleyball team fell by scores of 25-17, 25-17, 25-19 in a battle of Ivy League foes. The Bulldogs improved to 12-6 overall and remain atop the Ivy League standings with a record of 8-1, while the Big Green dipped to 13-7 and 4-5 in conference play.
"I am really proud of the way the team competed tonight," head coach Erin Lindsey said. "We didn't execute well enough to get the 'W', had a couple runs of reception breakdowns and had trouble regularly defending Molly Rogers, but I thought we showed great effort and composure. We are excited to head to Providence tonight to improve at Brown tomorrow."
Dartmouth took the first point off a Yale error and, even when a kill tied things up, the score remained close. After remaining within a few points of the Bulldogs but never quite being able to catch up, the Upper Valley squad went on a three-point run following two kills by junior Paige Caridi and one by sophomore Emily Astarita to sit within one (18-17). Unfortunately, the home team went on a run of its own, scoring seven unanswered points (25-17) to end the set.
Set two started in Yale's favor with four straight points, but the Green and White were able to slowly close the gap as the match continued. Trailing by eight (20-12), a Yale error, a kill by freshman Sara Lindquist and an ace by sophomore Kendall Ronzano got Dartmouth within five (20-15). Another error on the other side of the net and a kill by sophomore Lottie MacAulay were the last two Green points of the set before Yale shut it down.
After starting off a few points behind the Bulldogs, Dartmouth had its first advantage since the first set off a kill by Astarita, a pair by MacAulay and an ace by Caridi to take a 12-10 lead. From that point, there were five ties before Yale had two kills and capitalized on a Dartmouth error (20-17). The Green added one more kill and took advantage of a Bulldog error to get within one (20-19), but Yale scored six unanswered points to wrap up the match.
Astarita led the team with nine kills, while Caridi was right behind with eight. Sophomore Stacey Benton led with 23 assists, while classmate Julia Lau had 12 digs. Ronzano, Caridi and senior Alex Schoenberger each had an ace.
Dartmouth is in action Saturday night at Brown in a 5 p.m. contest.
