PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Continuing on its five-match road trip, the Dartmouth volleyball team dropped a close match to Brown on Saturday evening, 3-1, by scores of 19-25, 23-25, 25-21, 21-25. The Big Green are now 13-8 and 4-6 in conference action, while the Bears improved to 9-13 and 4-6 in Ivy League play the day after falling to Harvard.

For the second night in a row, sophomore Emily Astarita led the team with 16 kills, while freshman Sara Lindquist was close behind with 13. Astarita also had two aces, as did senior Alex Schoenberger. Sophomore Stacey Benton had 34 assists and junior Paige Caridi had 25 digs to lead the Green.

“It was very disappointing not to bring a higher level of play against Brown,” head coach Erin Lindsey said. “We had a lot of opportunities and did not convert by putting the ball away. Our service was very strong and we got them out of system quite a bit and shut down Maddie Lorde, their best outside hitter, but ultimately did not capitalize. We are disappointed, but looking forward to getting in the gym this week to prepare for Penn and Princeton.”

After Brown opened the first set by scoring four consecutive points, Dartmouth started to slowly catch up, tying the score at 7 off a kill by sophomore Kaira Lujan and then taking its first lead of the match off back-to-back aces by Astarita (9-7). After two more ties, the Bears took back the lead and were able to hold on until the end of the set. A Brown error allowed the Green and White to get within one (18-17), but a five-point run by the home team, broken up only by an Astarita kill, earned Brown its first victory of the night.

Set two started with three Brown errors to give Dartmouth a 3-1 lead right off the bat. Fifteen ties occurred from that point on. With a score of 22-21 in favor of the Bears, one kill apiece by Astarita and Lindquist gave the lead back to the Big Green. Two kills and a Dartmouth error allowed Brown to tie things up and then score the two points it needed to end the set.

The third set was just as close as the other two, but a six-point run by the Upper Valley squad ultimately allowed them to earn their lone victory of the night. After Brown tied the score at 12, Dartmouth capitalized on five Brown errors, an ace by Schoenberger and a kill by Lujan to take an 18-12 lead. Following three points by the Bears (18-16), the teams alternated points. With Dartmouth sitting ahead (23-18), Brown went on another scoring rampage to take the score to 23-21. A kill by Lindquist and Astarita wrapped things up nicely.

With a win under its belt, Dartmouth opened the fourth set with two Lindquist kills and a Brown error to take a 3-0 lead right from the start. The Big Green would maintain that edge until the home team tied the score and 16 and never looked back. Dartmouth got within two after a kill by Caridi and Schoenberger's second ace of the evening, but an ace and a Green error ended the match with a Brown victory.

Next weekend, Dartmouth will play its final two road games of the 2014 regular season, heading to Philadelphia to face Penn at 7 p.m. on Friday before traveling to New Jersey to take on Princeton at 5 p.m. the following day.
