PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – During its final weekend of away contests of the 2014 campaign, the Dartmouth volleyball team was swept by Penn (22-25, 16-25, 21-25) on a snowy Friday evening. The Big Green dipped to 13-9 and 4-7 in Ivy League play, while the Quakers are now 8-14 and 5-6 in conference action.

“I was proud of the way the team fought tonight, especially in the first and third sets,” head coach Erin Lindsey said. “We just needed to execute better on a few points here and there and it could have been a different match. I give credit to Penn, as they played good floor defense and made it very difficult for our hitters to score. Although we are disappointed to not get the win tonight, we are continuing to work to get better every day and I think we became a better team today.”

After Dartmouth won the first point off a kill by sophomore Emily Astarita, the rest of the first set could have gone either direction, as there were 12 ties and seven leader changes. Penn scored three straight points and held a slight edge until two Astarita kills and an ace by fellow sophomore Stacey Benton gave the Green an 11-9 advantage. A kill by junior Kaira Lujan tied the score at 18, but the Quakers went on a four-point run, an edge that would eventually lead them to victory. Two kills by senior Alex Schoenberger and one by freshman Sara Lindquist got the Green and White closer to a win, but it was Penn that reached 25 points first.

Another ace by Benton opened the second set, which was quite similar to the first in terms of ties and closeness. A kill by freshman Marisol Tracy and a pair by Astarita tied the score at 11 and, following a Dartmouth error and a kill by Penn, gave the opponent a 13-11 lead. Kills by Schoenberger and junior Paige Caridi, once again, tied the score. A six-point Quaker run gave the home team a 20-13 edge and Dartmouth was able to get points off a Caridi kill and two Penn errors before the set ended.

For the third set in a row, it was the Upper Valley squad that won the first point, this time off a kill by sophomore Emily Patrick. Much like the previous sets, the two teams remained close the entire set, tying the score 15 times. With the Big Green trailing 15-16, a Penn error and a pair of kills by Astarita turned things around to give them an 18-16 advantage. However, directly after that, the Quakers scored three straight points to take the lead back. An Astarita kill and an error on the other side of the net still had Penn ahead, 21-20, and four straight Quaker points, broken up by a kill by Schoenberger, ended the match.

Schoenberger led the Green with 11 kills, while Benton was first on the team with 15 assists, 11 digs and two of Dartmouth's three aces.

The Big Green will play their last road match of the year tomorrow, traveling to New Jersey to face Princeton at 5 p.m. After that, Dartmouth will return to Hanover for two home matches against Cornell and Columbia to wrapping up the regular season.
