THIS WEEKEND
At its final road weekend of the 2014 season, the Dartmouth volleyball team will look to snap a four-match losing streak when it first faces Penn at 7 p.m. on Friday before taking on Princeton at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
LAST TIME OUT
Over Halloween weekend, the Big Green dropped tough matches to Yale (17-25, 19-25, 19-25) and Brown (19-25, 23-25, 25-21, 21-25). Sophomore Emily Astarita led the team with a total of 25 kills, while freshman Sara Lindquist had a strong weekend with 21 kills and 14 digs.
SCOUTING THE QUAKERS
Since Dartmouth and Penn last met just three weeks ago, the Quakers went 1-2, winning their match against Columbia by a score of 3-1 and falling to Princeton, 3-1, and Cornell, 3-0. This weekend's matches against Dartmouth and Harvard will be Penn's final home events of the season before it travels to Brown and Yale to wrap things up.
LAST TIME vs. PENN
The night after defeating Princeton in five sets, the Green and White fell to Penn by scores of 21-25, 23-25, 25-19, 17-25. After narrowly dropping the first two sets, Dartmouth came back to win the third, capitalizing on a handful of Quaker errors. Although the score remained close in the fourth set and numerous ties occurred, Penn was able to secure the victory it needed to end the match.
ABOUT THE TIGERS
Princeton is on a three-match winning streak following 3-1 wins over Penn (Oct. 24) and Columbia (Oct. 31) and a sweep of Cornell (Nov. 1). The Tigers' last loss was during an 0-2 weekend on the road when it fell to Dartmouth and Harvard on Oct. 17-18.
LAST TIME vs. PRINCETON
On Dig Pink/Disco Night and the first day of Homecoming Weekend, Dartmouth had an exciting 3-2 victory over Princeton. The Green comfortably won the first two sets (25-19, 25-19), but the intensity in Leede Arena rose when the Tigers took the next two sets (25-22, 25-18). In the decisive fifth set, Princeton took the lead off three consecutive kills by Kendall Peterkin, the Ivy League leader, before Dartmouth turned things around. Four ties later, the home team finally took the lead off a kill by junior Paige Caridi, and the two teams remained within a point or two until an error and a Molly Kornfeind kill gave Dartmouth the 15th point it needed to secure the victory.
IVY LEAGUE STANDINGS
Over the weekend, Harvard snapped Yale's seven-match run with a 3-0 loss, upending the standings that had the Bulldogs atop for over a month. Now, Harvard and Yale share the spotlight and are tied for first with an 8-2 mark, while Princeton is third. Tied for fourth is the Upper Valley squad, Brown and Penn. Columbia and Cornell round out the Ancient Eight teams in seventh and eighth, respectively.
ONE LAST HURRAH
After being on the road for five consecutive matches, the Dartmouth volleyball team will return to Hanover next weekend for its final matches of the 2014 campaign. On Friday, Nov. 14, the Big Green will host Cornell at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Dartmouth will end the regular season and honor seniors Holly Harper, Maura Manley, Lucia Pohlman and Alex Schoenberger against Columbia at 5 p.m.
