NEW YORK – Freshman Wyatt Omsberg scored the game-winning goal on a header in the 96th minute off a corner kick by senior Stefan Defregger to give the Dartmouth men's soccer team a 1-0 win at Columbia on Saturday evening at the Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium.
The Big Green improves to 8-4-1 overall and 3-1-0 in the Ivy League. Columbia falls to 5-6-1 and 1-2-1 in the league. The visitors outshot the Lions, 19-17, with the help of three shots in extra time. Each team had seven corner kicks.
"I thought Columbia played an excellent game and really brought out our best," said head coach Chad Riley. "We were unlucky with a couple of finishes, and Stefan Cleveland came up with a couple of important stops to keep us level. Overall we are happy with the performance, effort and focus the team put in tonight. It was a great result against a strong Columbia team."
In the opening frame Dartmouth held a 3-2 advantage in shots with each keeper making one save. Offense picked up in the second half as junior Stefan Cleveland and Columbia's Kyle Jackson made four saves. Jackson stopped one of the three Big Green attempts with the final hitting the back of the cage.
Dartmouth opened the second stanza with back-to-back corner kicks and shots by senior Alex Adelabu and freshman Tyler Dowse. Columbia moved the ball into the Big Green zone, but a defensive block and missed shot kept the game scoreless. In the 62nd and 64th minute, Dartmouth's attack was back in motion with shots by freshman Matt Greer and senior Colin Heffron, respectively.
In the 89th minute, Columbia was issued a yellow card allowing Defregger a chance at goal on a free kick, which was stopped by Jackson. After the save Heffron blasted a ball over the net forcing overtime.
In overtime, Adelabu had two cracks at the goal. His first jetted high and Jackson saved the second, but the ball went out of bounds setting up the game-winner by Defregger and Omsberg.
Dartmouth heads to Boston College on Tuesday for its final non-conference game of the regular season.
