HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth men's soccer team picked up a crucial point with two games remaining in the Ivy League season with a one-goal tie against Harvard on a rainy Saturday evening at Burnham Field.
Dartmouth had a huge opportunity with less than 10 seconds remaining in double overtime when senior Alex Adelabu juked Harvard keeper Evan Mendez out of position, but a defender blocked the shot. Classmate Hugh Danilack then picked up the loose ball, but his shot hit the post as the clock expired.
"We've won three of the five overtime games. It's a testament to our hard work, focus and fitness levels," said head coach Chad Riley.
The draw puts Dartmouth (8-3-3, 3-1-1 Ivy) in a tie with Princeton for first place in the Ivy League with 10 points, as each team is 3-1-1 in the Ancient Eight. Dartmouth holds the tiebreaker over Princeton after the Big Green defeated the Tigers, 2-1 (OT), in early October. Princeton hosts Penn next weekend and concludes the season at Yale in two weeks.
"I have never enjoyed being a part of a team as much as this group," said Riley. "There are a lot of positives to take from this game."
The Big Green, coming off a 1-0 win over Boston College on Tuesday, played another complete performance, as they outshot the Crimson, 12-1, and held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks. Senior Stefan Defregger scored his first collegiate school off a 25-yard boot to the far back post in the sixth minute of play. Defregger, Dartmouth's primary set piece server used his strong leg to find the back of the net after he was left open in the midfield.
"Stefan has been a great player for us. He is strong on both ends and I am happy he scored tonight on what was a beautiful shot," Riley continued.
Harvard tied the game just before the first break on a score by Kyle Henderson after he was left a ball by Sam Brown just outside the box. Dartmouth added four more shots in the second frame with two on goal by senior Robin Alnas and junior Emory Orr.
"Robin was excellent against Boston College and once again tonight. It is contagious the effort he brings along with freshman Matt Danilack," Riley exclaimed.
In the second overtime, senior Gabe Stauber had a great opportunity from just outside the 18-yard box but his shot went wide.
Dartmouth travels to Cornell next Saturday and will conclude the regular season on Nov. 15 at home against Brown at 5 p.m.
