HANOVER, N.H. — The Ivy League announced its weekly football award winners today, and Dartmouth kick returner
Kirby Schoenthaler took home the Special Teams Player of the Week honor. This is the first weekly award for Schoenthaler and the second for a Big Green football player this fall.
A senior from Bartlesville, Okla., Schoenthaler set a school record with 198 kickoff return yards in a 52-19 defeat at fourth-ranked New Hampshire on Saturday evening. Nearly half of those yards came on a return shortly before halftime when he initially dropped the ball, then scooted up the right sideline to the Wildcat two-yard line, essentially carrying a pile of players for the final 10 yards. The 92-yard return is tied for the eighth longest in school history, and the longest without scoring a touchdown.
Those 198 yards are the single-game high this season among FCS players, and Schoenthaler is ranked 11th nationally in kickoff return average at 28.7 yards.
Dartmouth (1-1) returns to Hanover for its Ivy League opener against Penn (0-2) on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The Quakers are coming off a lopsided loss to a nationally ranked squad as well, having been defeated by Villanova, 41-7. The game will be televised by Fox College Sports Atlantic with Eric Frede and Steve DeOssie calling the action, and Dartmouth fans can listen to the broadcast team of Dick Lutsk and Wayne Young on 99Rock, WFRD 99.3 FM in Hanover through Big Green Insider on the Ivy League Digital Network (ILDN). Online video will not be available in the United States, but can be viewed live on the ILDN outside of the U.S.
Notes: Junior quarterback
Dalyn Williams is the other Big Green player to earn a weekly honor this season. He was selected as the co-Offensive Player of the Week last week … Dartmouth has had at least one player chosen as the Special Teams Player of the Week in each of the past six seasons.
