NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Dartmouth men's soccer senior Samuel Rosen picked the perfect time to score the first Ivy League goal of his collegiate career.
Rosen's tally in the 52nd minute – his second of the season and of his career — proved to be the lone goal of Saturday's conference road game at Yale for the Big Green as Dartmouth picked up the 1-0 win at Reese Stadium.
In earning the victory, Dartmouth improved to 2-0-0 in Ivy play and are 6-3-1 overall. The Bulldogs drop to 0-2-0 in Ancient Eight contests and 1-9-0 overall this season.
“We knew this was going to be a challenging game,” head coach Chad Riley said. “Credit to Yale, they are better than their record would have you to believe and we knew that coming in and prepared for a hard-fought match.
“The team kept plugging away doing what we needed to do to win this one,” Riley continued. “I am proud of another total team effort. It seems that when we need a big goal this season, there is always a different player who steps up and is ready to make that contribution. Today it was Sam.”
The winner came early in the second half as Rosen collected a loose ball outside the box and moved to his right. After just a few strides, the Branford, Connecticut, native — playing in front of family and friends just down the road from his hometown — unleashed a high, arcing shot that sailed across the box and inside the far left goalpost for the only marker of the match.
Goalie Stefan Cleveland was once again an anchor in goal, recording his fifth shutout of the season by making three saves.
“I felt we controlled the game pretty well,” Riley said. “Yale came back after we took the lead with some pressure and opportunities, but the play of the back four and Stefan was huge. Those guys were very good this afternoon.
“Shutouts are really about the commitment of all 11 guys on the field, though, not just the keeper and the guys right in front of him,” Riley added. “We are getting that commitment and these are the results.”
Dartmouth owned a 12-5 edge in total shots, including a 6-3 advantage in those on goal. Corner kicks also favored the visitors, 5-1.
The Green are back in action next Saturday, Oct. 17 at Penn in a game broadcast live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
