HANOVER, N.H. – The day after handing Yale its first Ivy League loss of the season, the Dartmouth volleyball team defeated Brown in straight sets (30-28, 25-17, 25-18) on Saturday in Leede Arena.
The Big Green improved to 7-7 overall and are 4-1 in conference action, while the Bears dipped to 8-8 and 2-3 in league play. Following Yale's 3-0 loss to Harvard, Dartmouth is now first among the Ancient Eight programs.
Senior Paige Caridi led both teams with 16 kills, while classmate Kayden Cook had 21 assists and freshman Zoe Leonard had 18 digs. Senior Kaira Lujan also had a big day, winning the final point for the home team with her kill, ending the match with 10 in all.
“I am almost more proud of the effort today than last night,” head coach Erin Lindsey said. “It is easy to get up and play the defending champion in the league, but it is harder to bring the same energy and discipline against a team that didn't win. I am most proud of the team's ability to stay really focused and stay aggressive offensively against a really strong defensive team.
I am especially proud of how Paige came on in the second set and really started attacking different angles and putting pressure on their defense,” Lindsey continued. “We also had some great performances from the middles, including some huge kills from Kaira.”
The first set was a long one that featured 13 ties in all. Dartmouth started off ahead, but a seven-point run by the visitors put Brown up, 18-11. Six consecutive Green points off two kills by Lujan, three errors by the Bears and an ace by freshman Sierra Lyle put the home team just one behind (18-17). A kill put Brown at match point (24-23), but an error tied the score, and the two teams would go through four more match points until an error tied things at 28, a kill by junior Emily Astarita made it match point and an ace by Benton ended it.
Dartmouth and Brown were evenly matched in the beginning of the second set, but six straight points by the Green off two Bear errors, three Caridi kills and an ace by Benton put Dartmouth ahead, 21-13. The Bears were able to get a few more points, but an Astarita kill and an ace by Leonard swiftly ended the set.
The Green had a slight advantage at the start of the third set, but the Bears pressured their way to end up just a couple points behind (15-13). Three errors on the other side of the net and a kill by Astarita gave Dartmouth the lead it needed and the home team soon held a 20-14 edge and three consecutive kills by the Big Green ended the match. Junior Danielle Glinka and Caridi put Dartmouth at match point and Lujan killed it to give the Green the win.
Dartmouth will be on the road next weekend, heading to New York to face Cornell on Friday and Columbia on Saturday.
