HANOVER, N.H. — Dartmouth quarterback Dalyn Williams earned numerous awards last week for his efforts against Penn, and this past Saturday provided an encore performance versus Yale in front of a sold-out homecoming crowd at Memorial Field to earn Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week honors from the conference office and College Sports Madness for the second straight week. On the other side of the ball, free safety David Caldwell was named the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week as the Big Green soundly defeated the previously unbeaten Bulldogs on Saturday, 35-3.
The senior from Corinth, Texas, broke several school records in the rout, most notably with his 435 passing yards to top the mark held by former NFL quarterback Jay Fiedler '94. Williams completed 29-of-53 throws and connected on four touchdowns for the second straight week and the fourth time in his career. His career total of 6,088 passing yards also boosted him into second place ahead of Brian Mann '02 and just 597 yards shy of Fiedler.
Another of Fiedler's records went down as Williams surpassed the Dartmouth legend for career total yards. He finished the game having accumulated 453 (which broke Williams' own Big Green record), giving him 7,525 in his career. Fiedler amassed 7,249 over a three-year span as freshmen were not allowed to play with the varsity when he arrived on campus.
In addition, Williams did not throw an interception, extending his streak of attempts without one to 234, topping the previous longest total of 216 set by Williams at the start of his career. He has been named the Ivy Offensive Player of the Week six times in his career, one shy of the school record held by Fiedler.
Caldwell, meanwhile, wreaked havoc on the Yale passing game, picking off two passes and breaking up three others while tying for the team lead with seven tackles on the afternoon, mostly after leaving briefly in the first quarter with an injury. After getting taped up by the athletic trainers, Caldwell returned with a vengeance, beginning with a fourth-down stop two-yards shy of the marker in Big Green territory with Dartmouth leading 14-0 early in the second quarter. Two of his three breakups came in the second half, and his two interceptions — the first Big Green player with two in a game in two years — both came in the red zone at the 10- and two-yard lines to keep the Bulldogs out of the end zone.
These are the fourth and fifth weekly conference awards bestowed upon Dartmouth players this year, joining linebacker Will McNamara (defense) and wide receiver/punt returner Ryan McManus (special teams) who took home their honors after the first week of play, as well as Williams' first one of the season last week.
Dartmouth looks to improve to 5-0 this Saturday when it plays at Central Connecticut State (2-4) with kickoff slated for noon. The game will be streamed live for free on NEC Front Row, while Big Green fans can listen to the broadcast team of Adam Giardino and Wayne Young '72 on 99Rock (WFRD 99.3 FM) locally and online through the Ivy League Digital Network. The pregame show begins half an hour before kickoff, and the Buddy Teevens Coach's Show will air on 99Rock at 10 a.m.
UPDATE: Both Williams and Caldwell were listed as FCS Football Studs of the Week by HERO Sports. Fans can vote for both to be the top stud on offense and defense by visiting the website.
