Freshman Amadu Kunateh scored the lone goal of the game in the 10th minute at Burnham Field, but was issued a red card in the 26th, forcing the Big Green (4-3-1, 1-0-0 Ivy) to play with 10 players for a majority of the game.
The Ivy League opener for both programs, Dartmouth defeated the team it shared the Ancient Eight crown with last fall as the Tigers (3-4-1, 0-1-0 Ivy) are now down a game in the chase for a championship.
“The card shook us a bit, but we responded well to the adversity,” head coach Chad Riley said. “I thought we regrouped well in the second half and played really strong defensively when we needed it most.
“The first 10 minutes were really tight,” Riley continued. “We came out and played really well in the beginning of the game when we needed it most against a team we knew was very good.”
Kunateh's second goal of the season was the result of a great centering feed from freshman Eduvie Ikoba near the end line and booted home the first marker of the game.
That tally early on proved to stand up as the game winner thanks to Stefan Cleveland's second straight shutout and his fourth of the season. Cleveland turned aside five shots in the win, holding off a Princeton team that was constantly pressuring with the extra man.
Goalkeeper Ben Hummel made three stops in taking the loss for the visitors.
Not surprisingly for the game, the Tigers outshout the home team, 11-6, including a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. Princeton also bested Dartmouth corner attempts, 4-2.
The Big Green are back in action on Tuesday evening as they host regional rival Vermont at Burnham Field. Game time is set for a 7 p.m. start.
